I found the trilogy peculiar.
Kaidan was apart of our original crew yet we could sacrifice him. More importantly despite knowing Kaidan for long Garrus ends up our best friend.
I was confident Kaidan would end up being our bestfriend. He seem the type to play the role anyways. Quiet introverted due who doesn't draw attention away from the star.
anyways, if the bestfriend this time is a human how will you respond.

I never felt like I had a designated best friend in ME, and I'm not expecting it this time. So I guess I'd be surprised if they designated one?

Garrus was the best friend? Not for my Shepard he wasn't. He was some turian that was on the Normandy. My Shepard's best friend is Conrad Verner.

In ME1 I considered Wrex my best friend; by the end anyway. In ME2 Garrus steps up to take main frend spot, I like darker ME2 Garrus better too. In ME3 I don't consider myself to have a best mate, except for Liara; who's bae but a distracted bae at that.

Man, I do not want any designated friend at all! The way they forced Garrus and Liara on Shepard was just creepy.

Uhm, all the companions have friendship dialogues. It's up to each player pick his or her Ryder's BFF if s/he wants to. I am more concerned that you cannot kill the companions off, because, let's face it, it is one of those little pleasures to engage in the video-games.

Well it would be better than a dirty Alien being the designated best friend. But really if any character gets forced into that role by teh writers that would be hella disappointing tbh.

I'm not sure one can say any specific character must be the PC's best friend, but if you can then I don't think it matters what species they are.

I'd prefer that the dialogue is balanced so that any one of the companions can be considered to be the PC's BFF by the player, rather than how the ME trilogy handled it.

If you didn't romance Liara, she seemed like a best friend material as well, rivaling Garrus.
But a character like Kaidan is appreciated tbh. You don't have to necessarily be best friends with them, they are like your sidekick. I like having a sidekick. They respect your authority and don't mind being in your shadow and remain loyal.

Yeah i don't particularly want a designated best friend. I can see in a trilogy that Liara/Garrus ended up pushed in that direction by the sheer time they were in your company, assuming Garrus didn't die in ME2 of course. Hopefully if Liam has more history with our character it still isn't a force best friend status and has more flexibility for us to nudge the degree of friendliness.

You sacrifice Kaidan because game force you to choose him or Ashley. and you choose to sacrifice Kaidan because he is Male. If game allow Kaidan to live and with Shepard on ME2 like Garrus, He will be Shepard best frinde (at least for some PC). In fact, Kaidan is not my best friend either because he is my Lover. For me, I feel like game force me to have Garrus as best friend. For MEA, If they want to give us Human as best frined, No problem (Human always my favourite) just allow me to choose who is my BF.

So, unpopular opinion it seems, but I'm ok with "forced" best friends, at least up until now, they all have worked well for me. Maybe it's the coincidence that I happen to like Garrus and Liara (or Varric in DA), OR maybe it's because I'm easily manipulated by all their demonstrations of loyalty and support I have to admit though, that I tend to prefer aliens or people which somehow are very different from my PC, I like the stories of friendships that crosses some kind of barrier, it's not very original, I know, but I still like them And it's nice to share similar experiences with people that it's very much like you, but it also nice findings things in common with someone that apparently it's not, and having someone in your life that gives you new points of view of things and such... Or maybe I'm just attracted to the exotic In any case, the gap doesn't have to be about the species... What I really would want from her/him, I think, it's that s/he is fun

You want someone that is there to make you shine. Second: I never really got a feeling of a forced best friend in mass effect, (they had alot of other people forced on me to make up for it). Third: I will make whoever I think is fun to be around my best friend. The purpose for me with a best friend is that they are as crazy as me. ex: Grunt, Wrex and Zaeed in Citadel DLC. Btw: We only had known Kaidan a mission or two more than Garrus.

If we ever meet, remind me not to be your friend... Heh, the companions, by definition, are a forced entity in the post BAldur's Gate games, so you can't just give them a wide berth in the woods, so it is hard to expect that absolutely all of them are going to be friends. Some of the companions are really more like pc's enemies depending on the characters' agendas. Moreover, on some playthroughs, the character's feelings will not be aligned with the player's, so it's one of the attractions of the meta-gaming imo to be able to see a death of a the death of certain companion in a well laid out cutscene. In any video game you normally murder through thousands of mobs anyway, and most of them had no chance to personally interact with the player. It's silly to try to transpose the things you play through in a game to any sort of RL analogies. I prefer having this option over not having it.

Personally I tend to find most BW human squadmates quite bland...I'm not saying they are objectively bland but that to me they do feel like that. BW IMO seems to shine when designing alien or non-human characters. I can't point the finger exactly on why I do find humans less interesting in their games but that's what I feel when playing BW games. I'm not even saying that I dislike humans in BW games but that I find them boring. So if the past games are an example of BW human writing then probably I won't befriend said designated human bro/sis.

Honestly, none of them are actually human and all of them behave "humanish." No matter how they're drawn. they're all just pixels with various 'human" personalities. Being an RPG, the game can't really designate who I'm going to consider to be my in-game best friend. Who occupies that role varies from playthrough to playthrough as I change who I take along with me on most of the missions and whether or not I even decide to just skip their various conversations. In the MET, if you did frequently skip over talking with certain squad mates, the dialogues you did have to have with them generally changed to reflect the fact that you had not been talking with them. Doing different playthroughs differently is what adds replayability value to the game, so I will probably do multiple ME:A playthroughs... and I will change my conversation patterns with the various NPCs in each one... and, no doubt, the results will be similar in that I'll be able to make it such that I can consider different characters my best friend in each of the different playthroughs.
