"Hey, remember that first long major gameplay video we should've released half a year ago but never bothered? Yes yes just let IGN handle it! Yes let them do whatever they want, send them the game, let them pick the worst player ever and make him play some of the least representative section, like one with extensive tutorial for new mechanics! No don't check on their video if it looks good! Yes, ignore the devs, the nerds obviously have no idea how to properly present their own creations, only the modern corpo elite like us know it! Yes, screw the fanbase and the internet! Yes apply for a raise for the entire team for job well done!"

The marketing for the game has been overall bad. A couple of weeks ago they finally got their groove on with that Combat trailer, and then later released the Characters trailer, the preview embargo lifted, and we even got a new Andromeda Initiative video. So they were on a roll for a little while. But this last video was a setback. But they can bounce back with the Exploration video this week, provided it shows how fleshed out the side quests are, and show some dialogue.
Also I'm sure people will post gifs of facial animations from the dialogue, because it's the meme flavor of the month. I honestly don't know how these people got passed the jank animations and faces from the Trilogy.

So, I'm not the only one who thinks that this marketing campaign is the worst I've ever seen for a game.

Combat videos had gif-worthy stuff too yet it didn't result in anything but few laughs. The videos were succesful and recieved very positively. And then they fuck up again. This game is 3 weeks out, this is not a time for major mistakes like this

It's nothing new with EA, really... they killed more of their games before release then any other company in history by now, and seeing how lukewarm the general anticipation for MEA is - outside of the fanbase, at least - it could very well be the next.

Remember the good naive days when Shinobi would reassure us the marketing is preparing a grand, meticulously-planned Fallout 4-like reveal?

When I watched the video yesterday and saw the first 15 seconds, I immediately thought "Oh great, here we go again..." I think it's safe to say Bioware noticed the backlash against the last video though. Hopefully they won't make the same mistake again.

It doesn't help in a bit if the actual developers did because they literally can't even say a word without marketing suits threatening to fire them.

So for the Gameplay videos have been great, and we know Exploration is next. So let's see if they can bounce back. Can't speak for their marketing team though, but I know if I was one of the head hanchos, I'd have given the marketing department a call yesterday.

I bet all that will result in is an even tighter information blockage until release. At least the players that got early access will be able to do some of their marketing for them... not that, that's an excuse, or anything.

I think more than anything, Early Access needs to hurry up and get here. I feel like first impressions is what's gonna save this game, assuming the marketing has been bad and the game is good.

I'm less convinced by the calls to have done it earlier.
But the OPs other criticisms are valid, in my view.
This demo for DAI was well received, it contains the dialogue and 'appears' a representative slice of 15 minutes of the game. By editing too heavily, what I suspect is a reasonable mission has appeared less coherent.
I don't know if Mike Laidlaw actually ran this slice of gameplay, but when he did, he played well.

That's the thing - people aren't stupid... well, THAT stupid. They tend to get suspicious when footage is so heavily controlled and edited... for whatever reason.

Yeah but the whole point of marketing is to make your product look as good as possible, even to the point of people getting suspicious. It's deffo not about releasing crappy videos that are loaded with obvious target material for criticism

There'd be a lot more excitement and a lot less criticism over this game, I had been calling the shots.

I think that regardless of the quality of the game, which might turn things around in the long period if it's good, the marketing certainly caused Bioware to lose a bit of sales, on release.

Oh they absolutely did. Without question this is gonna hurt the game's sales if they don't get their shit together pronto. That's why I said Early Access is what's gonna probably save this game.

Another possible reason could be: There are no actual side quests that aren't spoilery in any way... at least none that are presented well. Which would be even worse...

I was just getting over my skepticism, warming up to the game, pondering to buy it close to release day. Then this IGN trailer comes along, strolls up to me all casual like, kicks me in the quad and runs off giggling like Peebee.

What are you guys talking about? I think the campaign was great. I'm what you'd call a "light gamer," and I assume most people are (this forum excluded of course), and the campaign was more than enough for me. I mean, the Andromeda Initiative briefs alone got me more engaged than I was for most games I played. Usually I mainly hear about games on FB and decide if I want them, maybe watch a trailer or two or something. With this game I enter the Initiative almost weekly, I watch the YouTube trailers, I talk about it online here with you guys... I think the campaign was more than enough. If there's one thing I miss it's not more game-play videos and such, but cinematic trailers for the companions like they did for DA:I:

Between the two I'd say the second is more likely (the did show several types of side quests to the press)...but It goes in contrast to what certainly previews stated, on the smaller side quest having a narrative spin, though. I hope some of the Early Access manage to reach a planet to explore, where we can have access to side quests and see how they look like.

I'm giving the devs and production team a clear pass on this one, because I think the game is better than the 'internet hive mind' thinks. The point for debate is how much of sales is down to what the hive mind is banging on about.
What to show is a marketing decision.
You'd look derpy too, fired in an escape pod, but that look can be endearing if you've formed a relationship with the character. But we haven't yet.
Shepard derp was more tolerable because we knew Shepard:
Also problematic is editing the dialogue sequences which would have included spoilers for sure, but heck, there will be plenty of spoilers out there in 14 days. Contrary to the views of some, I think the marketing has been largely fine so far.
But the IGN edit has been the least helpful marketing addition in my view (because it didn't add anything to the CES trailer other than 'more', but raised questions). The best piece of marketing in my view has been the Gameplay Series #1: Combat.
