Aaryn Flynn even stated that he liked how Bethesda Game Studios handled the marketing for Fallout 4. Nobody knew about the game (there were a few leaks) until E3 2015 when it was revealed by Todd Howard. The game released five months later and it paid off as Fallout 4 had some of the biggest initial sales of any game ever. This is what BioWare is trying to replicate with Mass Effect Andromeda. It's completely deliberate and hopefully it pays off. Except that this NEVER HAPPENED. Bioware never replicated anything like the Fallout 4 marketing campaign and never will with 2 weeks left till Andromeda's release. Bethesda made a half an hour demo of everything, from character creator, exploration, combat, crafting etc. 6 months before release. Half a year before Andromeda release we got 5 minute microscopic gameplay at PS4 Pro event. To this day, Bioware did not show charater creator, crafting etc. Everything they're showing is coming incredibly late, months later than Fallout 4's reveal and in tiny drips split across multiple short videos. The only long gameplay footage released was a crappy section done by outside company IGN. This isn't comparable in any form fashion regardless what Aaryn said.

Are we equating lack of good marketing with that meaning the game being poor or ? What is it that BW could be doing with marketing, that they are not? I do realize the IGN PeeBee video could have been handled better.

Flynn never stated BioWare would copy Bethesda's approach to the letter. He merely stated he wanted to not release a ton of information about MEA until it was almost released. That is entirely true and BioWare has followed that approach for the last six months. We'll see just how successful it was once MEA is actually released and we see the initial sales.

They tried to, but they botched it horribly. If you ask me, I think at this stage in the game, the marketing for the game has been completely blown, at least in the sense that they're never gonna be able to achieve massive hype. They've made too many missteps. Anyone hyped at this point, are people who've made up their minds that they're gonna enjoy the game a long time ago, and there are plenty of those people. I'm one of them, I'm just venting today. But for those who are on the fence, they're probably gonna remain that way until first impressions and reviews are released. As soon as that Combat video released, they were on a path where they could've completely made up for all the bad marketing in the previous months. But once that IGN video released, it was over Jack. I said before when they released the Combat video, that they cannot afford to fuck up from that point on. Not only did they fuck up, but they fucked up in a pretty bad way. So at this point they just need to keep releasing those Gameplay videos, and hopefully impressions and reviews will be great. Oh and it would help if Destin or whoever demonstrates the next footage segment, to no suck at the game.

But compare the marketing for ME:A for the marketing to ME3, or even ME2. It's so night and day. I can see plenty of great things about this game, but it's like I have to wipe the mud and shit off the monitor in order to see it, because they're doing such a bad job showing this game off. They did amazing with the Combat and Character trailers, and the AI videos are cool too, but that's it. And speaking of the music from ME3, we still haven't even heard much of ME:A's music. If I were any of the key developers of ME:A, I would seriously be losing sleep at this point over the reactions to the IGN video. I'm really hoping they get their groove back with the Exploration video tomorrow. They need to start kicking ass from this point on, because they lost a lot of faith from people on the fence this past week. I mean this was not a good week at all. Do you want to know why MEA's marketing is so different? Blame DAI for this: In case you don't know the story, BioWare showed off a version of Crestwood and the Western Approach that were not in the official launch. This resulted in a large backlash from fans because the cut content (physics were scaled back and the keep system was entirely removed) was incredibly well-received. Unfortunately, it never made it into the game and didn't do BioWare any favors. The largest reason a lot of these features were removed is because they were not possible on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. Really, last gen hardware killed DAI's full potential. Thus, BioWare decided they didn't want to talk about their games a year or so in advance of their release. They didn't want to make promises about content or features they could not keep, which is why they've been radio silent for much of these last five years. The best they can do in the remaining VERY short 2 weeks of campaign is making sure other videos don't suck. Maybe that will negate some of the negatives but overall, this one will depend heavily on reviews and player impressions. Especially after ME3 ending fiasco. It's been 5 years but if Bioware thinks it completly doesn't matter anymore they're very wrong. Andromeda marketing should be doing everything possible to regain the faith/trust of the larger gaming community, not take it for granted

That doesn't make sense either because again, Bethesda showed all main gameplay mechanics right outta the gate. You are also making somewhat of an apples to oranges comparison. For one, Fallout 4 was actually already done by the time Todd Howard went up on stage at E3. The studio was only polishing for the next five months. That, obviously, is not the case with MEA which wasn't content complete until December. It's also fair to point out that Fallout 4 is an open world sandbox, which is different from what Mass Effect Andromeda is. That's not to say we shouldn't have been able to see the character creator, crafting, etc., but has BioWare ever really done marketing videos like that before? All they've historically done are cinematic trailers (have two of those) and then the occasional demo showing off gameplay. We've gotten a good look at combat, player progression, companions, a decent understanding of the main plot, and tomorrow exploration. Whether BioWare focused on the right aspects of the game will ultimately be something sales will determine. i get triggered seeing this video with that wondrous wind blowing the grass physics that never made it to the final game. It is upsetting to see how amazing the game was... until it was stripped.

Bioware was not adding or removing large chunks of content or gameplay mechanics in say, September. They were also at the polishing stage by then, just like Bethesda. Point is - Fallout 4 example has been brought up over and over again yet it never applied, the marketing campaigns were never similar and no grand long demo for Andromeda ever happened and 3 weeks before release we still haven't seen some core features like Character Creator for example.

We know for a fact that the MEA was not content complete until December because Mac Walters made remarks on the issue. He specifically stated that the team took home a "holiday build" of the game to determine if they felt it was good enough to make the target Spring release window. They determined the holiday build was sufficient and at that point the game was content complete when they announced an actual release date. Ever since that point BioWare Montreal has been squashing bugs, polishing, and testing MP. Fallout 4, on the other hand, had a release date announced the moment it was revealed. Well, as I already showed, BioWare did the "grand long demo" for DAI and that didn't turn out so well. It's still quite possible that we'll see a character creation video in the next three weeks. BioWare still has quite a bit of time left.

The whole thing is just strange. You'd think after the PR Nightmare that was ME3, they'd have planned a much better marketing campaign. I mean hell, Bioware HAS done great marketing campaigns. It just doesn't make any sense.

If Bethesda thought they wouldn't finish the game by Holidays they would delayed. And they were definitely not just sitting on completed game and waiting 6 months to release. And if Bioware never planned long demo, they should've never referenced Fallout 4 because that was the main point of its campaign, a surprise extensive demo.

zelda is lame and boring. Sorry if im not childish enough to enjoy this series. Says the person who's about to buy a game with the likely intention of seeing alien boobs and sex scenes within the next three weeks. An all ages adventure game with stylized graphics>computer generated sex scenes that attempt to not be porn and end up being awkward as all get the hell out on the maturity scale.

It's not Zelda's reviews (which imo are highly exaggerated cos, well, it's a Zelda/Nintendo game) that are going to impact ME:A, it's the quality of the game itself. If it's a better game then ofc it's going to win awards over Andromeda. It's not going to affect ME:A's sales or ratings though, so who cares? Holy shit how much need for attention do you people have? Seriously stop with these topics! We have enough of 'm already. ANdromeda will be just fine!

yes I deleted my top post thinking it would delete the thread, didn't work. anyway, some good points made but topic comparison prolly not all the useful. My new problem is: just finished ME2 again (first time on Insanity) - now have ME3 plus Zelda (yeah I like both.) No way I can do two 50 hour games before ME:A launches. First world problems...

Can't believe I'm essentially spending $360 plus tax for new Zelda game (that's Switch plus the game.) I did trade in my old Wii U (was collecting dust), 360, some other games. Prolly will cost me $150 out of pocket. I can't resist Zelda ugh. Damnit.

Can't believe I'm essentially spending $360 plus tax for new Zelda game (that's Switch plus the game.) I did trade in my old Wii U (was collecting dust), 360, some other games. Prolly will cost me $150 out of pocket. I can't resist Zelda ugh. Damnit. You should have bought BotW on your Wii U and then given me your Switch! I have the game coming tomorrow but I don't have a console to play it on! Help a Zelda fan out!

Too late Wait, you bought the game but can't play it? How come? Sadness. Pre-ordered the game on Amazon while also being put on the "notify list" for the Nintendo Switch on Amazon. I even bought the Wolf Link amiibo just so I could use Wolf Link in the game when I have the Switch! The struggle continues!
