So what's good about Zelda again? Nostalgia! I grew up playing games with my dad and we used to solve the dungeons together. I'm 30 now, and I do look at Zelda games a bit differently compared to other games in the same genre because of it. Good times...we even had to call the Nintendo hotline once for the ice dungoen in A link to the Past to find out about a floor to bomb, you know, before the internet was everywhere

I mean if anything BOTW's success will most definitely knock Andromeda out of the Game Of The Year spot. Zelda's fanbase is filled with Nintendo loyalists and die hard Zelda fans. Their unanimous love and praise for the game already secured a place for it as Game Of The Year. Mass Effects fanbase is already split with skepticism and disapproval before the game's even released, plus it's plagued by non Mass Effect fans who want to hate it for whatever manufactured and contrived reason. Even if Mass Effect is as great a game as Zelda, the fanbases will make sure one doesn't compare to the other. Aside from that, I can't see how BOTW scores will affect Andromeda in anyway, aside from pissing matches in forums.

My first thought regarding my fondness from Zelda comes from this: If you absolutely gotta play around with time traveling tropes you gotta do it properly like it is here. Ocarina of Time is not just a story about a guy defeating evil via time travel. It's about what it means to grow up. The second you step into the darkened, depressing Hyrule after the 7-year skip, it's a reflection of what it feels like to grow up and realizing that the world is sometimes a very dark place. Upon defeating the final boss and saving the world your reward is putting the sword that took you forward in time back into the pedestal, reverting to your childhood again (actually leaving fate of the world uncertain) because childhood is precious and our hero would not go without it.
So you have your save-the-world plot and we know it ends happily when Link defeats Ganon and frees Hyrule from his evil clutches, but regardless, Link goes back in time and decides to live it out properly and the plot is resolved by making a pretty bold move. It's no wonder the next game in the series after the Majora's Mask spinoff, starts with a tale of a legendary hero who "didn't return" to save the world, causing the world to be reborn by the gods.
If you can't tell I like Zelda's lore despite knowing it's kind of a cheesy story.

If we're talking about metacritic(insert obligatory lolmetacritc here) then 98/100 is a 4 way tie between Zelda BotW, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, GTA 4, and Soul Calibur. Holy crap, those last three actually got 98s??? Haven't played BotW yet, but IMO most Nintendo games have been overrated by professional reviewers lately. It's obvious they really want Nintendo to succeed and are letting that trickle into their scores. As for the OP's question, any game in the 90s will have a negative impact on ME:A's score. Video games are always evolving and getting more impressive. By necessity, rating scales have to compensate.

If all the leaders are men would that means it's all about guy power? Women make up more then half the human population so some should be leaders. And with the exception of the asari counil member we didn't see any powerful female leaders of a powerful country or so until the female krogan and female salarian. Although I suppose aria can be considered one in ME2 since she is leader of an entire outlaw asteroid. If the characters are good I don't care. ANd I doubt they are gonna make a big deal of it.

Gotta agree with the poster, GOTY is probably Zelda's after its reception.

Be honest I've play 30mins of the new Zelda game and it bored me out of my mind I made it to the first big village, it's so open world now. I miss the hand-holding and structure. It's well done but doesn't seem completely like Zelda to me yet. Also this is more RPG-like w/ weapons breaking and armor upgrades, etc.

I was thinking Horizon Zero Dawn would hurt ME:A. Don't know anything about Zelda but Horizon has branching conversations similar to ME (although not as deep, obviously). But the facial animations look amazing and people have been harping on that lately.

Chr-i-st...all the 0's Zelda fans are dropping at Horizon at metacritic, like all out children brawl in kindergarten. Will it impact ratings? No...only performance issues might, in comparison to Horizon. But sales very unlikely, Mass Effect is still ( sort of) one of a kind in AAA genre.

Doubt it. If anything the true quality of Zelda is going to make ME stand out more. Despite the reviews and some of the die hards trying to wave the Zelda banner, a lot of gamers have voiced their displeasure with how BotW turned out. It is an open world game that is operating like it is the early 2000s, ditches many of the Zelda staples, and has some of the worst mechanics you will find in a game right now... the backlash by the fanbase will be massive and severe after the honeymoon period ends. I mean, it's already getting torn to shreds by many gamers already.
All Mass Effect has to do is weather the fans that will never like a Bioware game and it should be fine.
