I'm going to kick this beehive and say that anyone who played ME2 and ME3 knows about this guy and the character assassination he went through. Sure he wasn't the most popular. But he was calm, sensible, well grounded back in ME2. He was the guy who helped Shepard survive since waking up in Lazarus station. He was one you could trust to get your second team out alive during the suicide mission if Garrus was dead and you weren't sure about Miranda. Let's give a moment in remembrance to a character that had potential to be great and was sadly chopped into one of the most awkward stereotypes. Let us not forget the fond memories he gave us in Old Spice parodies. Jacob deserved better writing.

The one thing I didn't like about Jacob was how standoff-ish he was. He seemed like he just wanted to have a casual friendship with Shep, which is fine for real life people but for a fictional character I found it kinda odd and annoying. It would have been nice to actually spill some drinks on the Citadel and get to know one another a bit better.
I didn't know he could lead the second team.

Yah, for the suicide mission, Jacob, Miranda and Garrus were the 3 team leaders who could get everyone out alive and survive themselves. I think Jacob was meant to be the opposite of Kaidan to counteract the impression he was whiny (Not sure how it sounded like that). I think you're right about how standoffish he could be, Miranda and he seem to trade places in how friendly they are after the Normandy SR2 is introduced. But no worse than Garrus' "Can it wait? I'm in the middle of-" I do know Femshep's creepy sultry greeting scared a lot of female gamers away from talking to Jacob. Poor Jacob, clockblocked by autodialogue! Another thing that probably worked against Jacob was his combat specialization. He was too squishy compared to Grunt, was outperformed in biotics by Jack and simply had nothing to help a Vanguard class that needed a counter to tech.

I've yet to see his romance at work... and I intend to keep it that way. Maybe I'll hold what little respect I have for him this way. Also, I like his loyalty mission more than the character itself..

Jacob had the potential to be a nice, no-baggage romance. When I first saw him in ME2 and heard about his experiences with the Alliance I thought "oh, I like this guy, I think maybe I'll romance him." Then Shepard had to say "I just want to talk for a bit" in that terrible sexual harassment sort of way and I just couldn't stomach it. Which is probably good, because he and his father were pretty badly mishandled in my opinion. What a waste.

Wow, Jacob. I was in the Jacob-thread for Mass Effect 2 all the time, even got a comission from an artist for my FemShep and Jacob together. He was such a great guy in ME2. I casually disregard the little strange voice that FemShep has when she first talks to him and continue the romance from there. Besides being calm and rational the greatest draw for me was that he was the first squadmate who turned to Shepard and asked how she was holding up. I thought that that was amazing. Normally it is for the protagonist to try to help out everyone else left and right, make their lives better and hope that one of them might even care a little bit extra for you. I was severely disapointed at the treatment he got in ME3, it was just such a sharp contrast to who he had been earlier. I would have pegged him as the one person that would always have your back judging by ME2 but that was just me. At least the romance is still there in ME2, I can always let him have an accident in the suicide-mission at the end. If I get the time to do a rerun of ME2 and romances him again it will be fun to talk about Jacob again. He was a good guy, wish it could have turned out differently. * waves at themikefest * Great to see you here too

Unfortunately, the FemShep that romanced Jacob has the LUCKY misfortune of not transferring over to ME3 after reading how he was handled. Only three of my files made it to ME3.

Ah, Jacob. I actually like him most of the time I have never really seen his romance so far, but I know of the community's thoughts about it Yet I will romance him in my next run. But I specifically make a BitchShep who's manipulative and an ass to the crew, so she actually deserves getting dumped, haha. I know I will cringe a lot, but hey, it can be fun too, right? Maybe? In my first FemShep run I didn't talk to Jacob at all because of her frigging flirty voice, which didn't fit her at all, but now with my second I did, and it's not so bad when you talk normal and neutral to him.

I liked Jacob in ME2 for the same reason I liked Kaidan in ME1, they were reliable and loyal, if somewhat boring. What BioWare did to Jacob in ME3 still boggles my mind to this day.

That whole mess screamed, "WE RAN OUT OF TIME!!!" (I've had projects that are very much like that; You know it's bad, godawful, but the deadline was merciless and now you have to face the shame and disgrace) Usually, Bioware is known for trying to improve a character by listening to the most prevalent complaint and giving it acknowledgement. Turian counselor an arse? He's the first to offer help in ME3 while the other two dickered around. Thane romance forgotten? He gets a funeral in Citadel. Not to say it always worked out, but because I believe they would try, the first thing that happened when I heard what Jacob did was my jaw literally dropping open and me saying, "Wow. They really didn't try to make us like him." That it would be a metagame reason that hit instead of an in game belief convinces me that this was never intended for Jacob in ME3. In short, had more time and care been allowed for ME3, a lot more people would be happy. It wasn't just the endings that wrecked the third game. *sigh* Now I can't stop thinking about Rick and Morty where there's a parallel universe with a much better game there. Worth the telepathic spiders? Hmmm...

It's kind of sad, because his ME2 writer is Lukas K. One of my favorite writers left (Aveline, Sera, a lot of the Arishok quest and sarcastic Hawke apparently). So I kind of hate to say bad things, but I guess everyone has their bad moments.

Jupp, calm and reliable. That's something that really works for me. For me at least the biggest problem with the Jacob-romance was FemShep. I thought that Jacob was just fine, dat voice too. It's been a long time since I last did a ME2 PT so I'm not really up to date. So many little things that I liked about his character that I have forgotten but I remember that I felt that it was a different character than what I usually romanced in that he was sure of himself and what he felt for FemShep. No need to rush anything, but he was fully comitted. Like he said at one point, "it's you, all you." If you compare Jacob to say the male romances in DA2, Fenris and Anders who were well, shall we say a little bit more angsty. It will be interesting to see what will come up on ME:A. Ha ha, now I want to fire up ME2 again.
