I get the sense that opinions regarding this game will be all over the place. Some people will say it's the greatest RPG of all time, others will say it's complete garbage and killed the Mass Effect franchise. I get the sense there won't be much in between either.

There's another option, which pretty much sums up my feelings about it atm: meh.

Yeah, BioWare games in general have been pretty "love it or hate it" ever since EA.
There are those who like the new directions they've gone in, and those who resent them for having changed their previous formulas. Neither side is inherently right, but it results in very mixed responses from what can only be described as a very passionate fanbase =P

Dunno about that. I suspect I will like the combat and bits and pieces of the story but that I won't like a lot of the scanning, exploration, driving, crafting and general pacing. There will be bits I love and bits I think they went in the wrong direction.

So far we've had two negative impressions from the preview. Peter Brown on the Bombcast, and Rob Walker from RPS. So how will this game review?
Who the hell knows. At this point, it's really anyone's guess.
I do however think it's safe to say that the game will probably score less than ME1-3 and DA:I on Metacritic. By how much, who knows, but based on the jank we've seen, and the fact that we have two negative impressions so far, I don't feel like it's going to get glowing praise like the Trilogy got. And I will say this. If the game is divisive and ends up in the low 80s or god forbid the high 70s, heads are probably going to roll at Bioware. We do know these companies value their game's Metacritic scores to some extent, unless your game is review proof (like Call of Duty). It'll also mean Mass Effect will no longer be looked at as a High Quality franchise. To a lot of people, the series was kinda ruined after ME3's ending. As far as a lot of people are concerned, they've already blown it. I like the look of the game, but there's A LOT of fucking people who don't, and if these two negative impressions are of any indication, I don't think ME:A's chances are as high as I thought they were in terms of critical reception.
Sorry to sound doom and gloom, because for all I know the game can still sell very well. We'll know for sure what reception to this game is gonna be like this Thursday when Early Access is lifted. 10 hours is plenty of time for people to decide if they'll like the game or not. If reception is mixed on Thursday, the game might be fucked. I've been a Bioware fan since Kotor 1 and I have followed the development of every game since then. I have NEVER seen anything close to the amount of cynicism and negativity this game has been receiving already, compared to the lead up to release for their other games. I thought DA:I had a lot of skeptical people at the time, that shit was nothing compared to what I'm seeing now.

I think its going to be way worse than that, it will have as many good parts as bad parts making it mediocre. And mediocre is truly bad because it makes it impossible to hate or love it.

I know Kotaku has released an article praising the game. Do you know of any more? That's not a challenge, I'm simply asking because most outlets from what I've seen have streamed the game, but I haven't seen many Impressions articles.

Not going to lie part of me wishes a ME like game would come out so they would have some competition.

If it's anything like TW3 or any Bioware game, then it'll be some serious competition. Truth be told, I've watched a lot of the ME:A streams, and I LOVE what I've seen for the most part. So I think your mileage may vary on this game. But I think there's definitely going to be some people who won't dig it.

I know Star Citizen is not an rpg and people expecting even a mediocre bioware story will be disappointed, but it's the only big AAA game on the block that has a massive sci-fi world and a similar look and feel to ME setting. Also I think Cyberpunk 2077 will be astounding. Considering the Witcher 3 is my favorite game of all time. Second being Majora's Mask. Somehow outdoing ME1 and Dragon Age Origins. Witcher 3/series is one of those games and settings that is always on my mind just due to how astounding it was. If every game in the ME trilogy was as strong as ME1 and the companions of ME2 it could perhaps have remained there, but the ME3 ending retroactively damages the entire series. If MEA is a failure and EA still find it in their cold corporate logic to give it one more chance then all I can see is a COMPLETE from the ground up reboot of the series. This would be a last desperate chance to turn things around or join command and conquer.

I confess that I don't see the point in speculating about what other people will think about the game when we'll be able to experience it for ourselves in 2-7 days! TBH, everything I've seen thus far looks pretty damn awesome. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Yeah, but CDPR isn't really one to put out a game before it's absolutely ready, and all reports say the game's gonna be monstrous. I figure we might hear about it in the next year or so, but I don't imagine we'll actually get it for some time. Hell, maybe it'll be going toe to toe with The Elder Scrolls 6 for all I know.

They put Cyberpunk on hold until TW3 was finished. So it's been in full development for almost a couple years now. We'll either see something this year or the next. If Andromeda is a bust, a lot of people will be looking towards Cyberpunk 2077 to fill in the gap. CDProjektRed is pretty much the current King of the WRPG world. Bethesda is shitting the bed, and Bioware....well we'll see very soon. I really wish there where more than 3 companies that made legit AAA quality western RPG's. Some would say its only 1, but i would say its 4. You forgot Obsidian. I do think Bioware and Bethesda has a lot of work to do though going forward.

We're still in that weird time where pretty much all the non-RPG developers want to be RPGs and pretty much all the RPG developers don't want to be RPGs anymore, so who knows, maybe a new AAA RPG will come out of the left field somewhere down the line.
