First, before you think I'm a racist white guy, I'm actually middle eastern in real life.
The character Jarun Tann is played by Kumail Nanjiani who has a middle eastern accent.
1. Salarians have never had a middle eastern accent. 2. In previous Mass Effect titles you NEVER had to stop and think why the Salarians were speaking english with an accent.
When I hear Jarun Tann's middle eastern accent, it breaks immersion for me. I immediately think that Kumail Nanjiani was cast for diversity political correct reasons and not because his voice acting was the best for the job. The concept of 'liberal leftist diversity" in most cases is the enemy of immersion.
It's perfectly fine to hire a middle eastern as a voice actor for Jarun Tann, BUT make sure the voice actor speaks perfect English without an accent to match the enunciation of the Salarians from previous Mass Effect titles.
Now, I'm not unreasonable, perhaps Jarun Tann's accent is explained in game via lore & codex, if that's the case, then I'm fine with that. Perhaps there are different sub-races of Salarians? Maybe Salarians on one part of their planet enunciate differently than say Salarians of the south. If the game explains that, then I'll be 100% fine with that.
I had a similar problem with Admiral Shala'Raan vas Tonbay, I really like the real life actress, but it would've been nice if the Quarian lore touched on the different sub-races of Quarians.
IMO different accents should be explained, it adds to immersion.

I don't like the fact that it sounds like a voiceover. I know that's what it is, but I can't get over the fact that it sounds like a guy in a studio and not a salarian.

Actually i think he was cast because he is a pretty big fan of the trilogy, and on a hip tv show on HBO about nerds. I didn't break immersion for me in regards to the accent, i just think his character was a bit meh overall. His voice acting skills are not exactly great either.

Kumail was cast because he is awesome, hilarious, and a fan. Let it go.

Can we go back to the idiocy of talking about Sarah Ryder's face? Those complaints made more sense than this.
Why? BECAUSE YOU RECOGNIZE IT AS AN ACCENT SINCE IT'S ONE YOU ARE MOST FAMILIAR WITH.
You can hear the Canadianisms in everything Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer said; you might not have noticed because you may not be familiar with the nuances of North American English accents.
You're getting in a tussy over something that is nothing more than an asinine nitpick.

Different sub-races do not have to be explained for humans. In the case of Salarians, they should be explained, why? Because it adds to immersion to learn about the different sub-races of Salarians. IMO, you don't cast people because they're awesome, hilarious and a fan. You should cast people because their voice acting talent & skill is the best fit for a Salarian. Many.

Salarian voice acting in this game just seem all over the place this time. I think the team wants to "retcon" their voices to allow for more diversity in their race. It will take time to get used to but I'm okay with it. that one salarian that sounds like an unenthusiastic teen is immersion breaking though.

Kind of an issue I have with some Celebrity voice actors. They tend to sound exactly the same as their normal voice.

I suspect Kumail was cast because he's a good actor and fan of the series. I could go on but the supposition of the title makes this thread fuckin' ridiculous.

the big problem with him is the lackluster VA work and poor editing in conversations involving more than one person

Kumail has a very monotone dry humor that is not being utilized . They should have cast him in a less serious role. Watch harmonquest hes great in that.

So that's why Tann sounded weird. I had my eye brows raised the entire time when I first spoke to him.
On a note about diversity. I saw an Indian dude in the Nexus, Raj something. What I find strange is that he's the only 1.

I get what you mean, via accents.
Its always kinda weird when its almost random, especially when you have been accustomed to a general tone or dialect for a species.
A french krogan out of nowhere would be weird. Or a Chinese turian. Nothing wrong with establishing various accents in the aliens, but when you closely associate that with humans only it can be jarring.
Does Sur'Kesh have something resembling India? Did Jarun spend a bunch of time in India? There's a level of dissonance when its unexpected, and most games largely using varying accents from the Commonwealth (Australia, UK, North America) for aliens.
Now, if you came across a group of Salarians with the accent, it would be different. Your brain would almost go "Oh okay!". But just one makes it stand out as so peculiar.

Hell, after ME1 we stopped hearing different human accents until we got to London, which is another problem. As for bad interpretations, that's on you.

Isn't point 1 a problem with the trilogy rather than a design principle to be preserved? The alien cultures should be more diverse. I agree, Diversity among aliens is more immersive. I'm fine with that as long as it's explained in the lore, codex or by the NPC. Human: "I've met lots of Salarians, but you don't sound like the others." Salarian: "I'm from the southern part of our homeworld." Something as simple as that is all I would need. I love to knitpick immersion the same way Rowling, Tolkien & Martin knitpick when creating their worlds.

Why was Miranda the only one with an Australian accent?
Why is Suvi the only one (so far) with a Scottish accent?
Why was Shepard distinctly Canadian?
Why were the Quarians pretty much all over the map when it came to accents?
There is reaching for stuff to complain about, then there's this.
