Friendship path is nice, but both genders having access to a love story with a linchpin character is essential imo for the genre. You come to a new Galaxy, you meet a person from the population who becomes your guide, you fall in love with him/her. You co-create the game's story as a part of the love affair. It's important to me that both male and female protagonist had a chance to have this romantic experience. Like in DA2, with Anders. The game would have been different to me if he were just friend. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that. I don't consider a romance path to be essential: I didn't feel that with Morrigan, Alistair, Anders, Isabella, Solas and so on. I consider the friendship and romance paths to be different paths but I consider neither to be less in comparison to the other or the story: merely different. I prefer the romance to be a part of the overall story as much as possible in my PTs and for the love interest to be a plot shaper or plot mover or give the plot a personal dimension. That drives me to select characters like Thane, Anders, Dorian and Jaal as the most satisfying options. Despite Jaal's romance not emotionally impacting me, it's great storytelling.

I'm still surprised Liam wasn't the one chosen for Sara. It's like Jaal was planned for her before they even created the scenes or added the voice actors.

Would have been my choice as well, 'cause plot. Yeah and his romance scene is just like Vetra's. I first heard that Jaal's scene was PG and thought he was just an added romance, but when that scene happened I was very WTF after seeing Liam's romance. And he was in Sara's trailer too when all bets were on Liam. It seems Scott/Cora and Sara/Jaal had the most focus, then PeeBee for Scott with Sara's model swapped. The rest were just so you could romance others. Vetra imo deserved a better sex scene.

Liam is just an underling you bring from home. Jaal is the one alien liaison introducing the new Galaxy to you. Liam has better scenes than Jaal in my game. That soccer match is particularly dear compared to the contrived plot of Jaal'-Akksul. Also, they managed to focus camera just right to get the most from Liam's very pretty eyes. Both characters have VAs that make chars less sexy rather than more, Imo. If they wanted Jaal to be calm and sexy, my pick would be Bao Dur's VA that made me gamegasm the entire game with his voice. I have not seen Liam past (reloaded) walking away from the soccer match into an FTB, but a well animated kiss would have done it for me. I like pretty backgrounds, but I am not the intended audience for bouncing boobs and butts.

How so? The friendship route with Jaal provides an insight into his character and the angara: his role as a guide in regards to the angara is not limited to his romance route. The same applies to the friendship route with Anders which, as I recall, provides an insight into his character and involvement in what he'll eventually do. I've done both routes with Anders and I didn't feel like one path was more lacking than the other or made his later act have less of an impact. Friendship path is nice, but both genders having access to a love story with a linchpin character is essential imo for the genre. Alistair and Morrigan were gender gated, Solas was gender gated (and Cullen and Dorian, who also had strong links to the plot), Liara wasn't but she was female, and we all know why that's treated differently, Miranda was gender gated, Garrus too, and even Javik (who was also a gag romance). It's nothing new, unfortunately. If the DA2 team had more time I bet the characters would have been gender gated too.

I knew I'd romance Jaal first, but since he was kept so secret I expected less not more. Yeah for me Liam's soccer scene and Jaal's home visits are pretty cute, but the LM's are still eh... though I did love the ship exploding!

I'm pretty sure they were trying to capitalize on Garrus' popularity with the females, so they marketed Jaal as a romance for Sara instead of Liam.

I played a male Inquisitor for Dorian because a Tevinter magister was something I always wanted. It wasn't a problem. Now, Solas I could never romance because I just can't play elves for some reason, but that's on me.

Ironically, punished by the romance for being an elf-maiden. In DA:I, elf-maiden could romance the most lucrative romance (save for Dorian), and I could not play an elf-maiden. That loli avatar... omg, just no. I broke the romance gate for a female Qunari, but the moment Solas head disappeared into her bosom altering the romance scene from aww... to ah-ha-ha-hah! I gavce up and rerolled a male for Dorian. No regrets.

You can't make another Garrus. Not possible. Jaal is Javik lol I wanted Zenith, i.e. Akksul really, if he ever said: "I don't trust you, Human, but I will work with you." I don't have the DLCs for ME3, so never really met jaavik. In the end, in all likelihood, Reyes is going to be a romance that most compatible with what I like in my videogame romances, but I have been atypically romancing humans for three games in a row (Alistair, Anders and Dorian) and really wanted a non-human romance I loved. I've also hoped to enjoy playing a female again, but that group composition, all girls, just makes me want to play a male because of the OCD need to balance it out with a gorgeous male.

From NeoGAF, posted by Madness: "I wonder if all those guys wanting BioWare to #makeJaalBi and spamming nonstop thousands of times so you cannot even read other mass effect tweets actually got to talk to him and heard his heartbreaking story about his childhood love on the farm and how she ended up marrying his more well known brother etc. I have never seen a such a concerted attempt to make someone who is clearly heterosexual in a human sense into bisexual."This is my opinion about the chosen sexuality for any character, any criticism towards it and any accusations that BioWare is disrespecting this that or the other... EVER. I generally don't think they should make Jaal bi. If people want an additional gay romance option you have a perfectly built one in Avitus. Jaal's backstory is awesome and makes sense, don't mess with it.

Though I'm not really advocating bi Jaal either at this point, since I feel like it's too late. Sadly there isn't another fix possible for no squadmate m/m LI problem.

Got to be honest i never understood the outrage over the lack of a companion being gay. Gil was a good romance I enjoyed, and bi Reyes worked well. I like Kaiden but really he was unavailable for the first chunk of ME3 anyway. Bioware remains one of the few companies that even makes the effort and I see no reason to jump all over them.

Gil and Reyes romances are simply shorter and they have less time as characters. I don't really see their effort with ME:A when there is 5 m/f romances with 3 squadmates and Cora having most romance content out of all LI's. They pretty much prioritized one group so much that other were neglected.
