Yup, exactly. Arcann wanted to kill the Outlander because his father was in their head. That was the only reason why he ever cared about them. And he didn't want to kill his father because of some noble intentions either, he wanted to prove that he was better than daddy. He spared their life because he needed someone to frame for Valkorion's murder.
KOTFE and KOTET were huge disappointmens for me. Arcann's redemption felt pretty forced and rushed. I mean, he turned good because of a magic ritual in a matter of a few seconds. He didn't even choose to be redeemed, Senya made that choice for him.
I was hoping they would come up with some interesting twist, like Thexan turning out to be alive and then joining the Outlander to help them defeat Valkorion and redeem Arcann, which would actually be a touching and deeply personal story. But nope, didn't happen. So much potential wasted.
Arcann is already the next in line to the throne. He doesn't need the Outlander to claim the throne or frame for his father's death (literally everyone with the force knew the Sith Emperor isn't truly gone), he's only using Outlander to justify his wars against the core worlds... which ended up in five years of relative peace under his hegemony and before that Republic and Imps was already at war for years which is another one of his daddy's handiwork.
Arcann only care about his father. Valkorion's constant neglect really hurt him and he sacrificed everything just so to be acknowledged by his father because he love his family and he only wanted his father to love him back. And his father only accept him after Arcann killed his own beloved brother. That's how twisted Valkorion's manipulation was and how it drive Arcann further into the Dark Side that destroying his father is the single thing that consumed him. I've played both LS and DS situation. Killed Senya, lied to him about him causing his mother's death until he figured out that was a lie. I've watched Valkorion verbally abuse him in those two expansions. Arcann is very much as abused as Vaylin.
If you've played Imperial Agent, there's an arc where you're in Voss where you had a healing ritual. "The wellsprings is for the broken. The mystics make bodies whole." The ritual doesn't change him to be good, he already have that potential of goodness in him. He still have the capacity to love. The love and regret he had for Thexan. The love he have for Vaylin and the fact that he still love his mother even after 25 years of separation and looking how devastated he was when Valkorion doesn't care about his family showed that despite it all, he still love his father. And Thexan isn't just Arcann's older brother but his identical twin and the light side embodiment of himself. Without Thexan, he lost that balance. Even Sith Warrior have a version of this on Tatooine. The mystics merely cleanse the darkness until Arcann is strong enough to be himself again and resist his father's influence. He himself stated he doesn't want to be redeemed but he wanted to atone for his mistakes, he gladly sacrifice his throne despite it being his own birthright. And my Lady Wrath did a LOT of terrible bad and ruthless DS things herself. Its quite hypocritical for her to punish Arcann when she's not exactly clean. That's why the Alliance exist, to give everyone a second chance and that is what she represent to her people; hope. Which is why Arcann is perfect for her. He's the first to call her his Empress. The Emperor and his Wrath. Its destiny.
