Ryder is nothing like Shepard when he/she talks.
Ryder is almost exactly like Shepard whenever there is combat going on, you certainly still get the power fantasy of mowing down hordes of enemies... except that the game and some NPCs keep telling you how young and inexperienced you are after you're done.

Also it seems that the probability to receive a schematic from any given chest goes down the more schematics you already own. It's like the game rolls the schematic you would receive from a table of all existing schematics - as opposed to a table of schematics you don't own yet - and if it rolls a schematic you already have, you simply don't get one at all.

I'd been following BioWare closely since Baldur's Gate, and as soon as Dragon Age: Origins was available, I found the preorder-button. Then delivery was delayed for two days and I got so cranky over it that several people in my WoW guild at that time breathed a sigh of relief when it finally arrived... I was completely engrossed by Origins from beginning to finale, and when the credits rolled I read them to the end while listening to the sound track, went back to the main menu and clicked "New Game". Good old days.

The choice of protagonist is unrelated to the quality of the writing and the game in general.
So, no. Shepard's story is over anyway.

That always bothered me: Meredith was right there, when Anders blew up the church, he confessed afterwards and waited for his punishment. Yet Meredith did - nothing. She turned around, accused Orsino as if Anders wasn't even there ... what the hell? I mean, even if she wanted to pin Anders deed on Orsino and the circle mages too, she could have dealt with the one standing there confessing first and then accuse Orsino of helping. That always seemed highly illogical to me (to quote a favorite Vulcan) Poor writing. One of the pillars of BioWare's storytelling seems to be that any faction the current protagonist is not a member of can and will act like morons at any given time. Grey Wardens were so cool in Origins, and look what a joke they became in Inquisition. Mages and Templars both make stupid decisions throughout the franchise. Meanwhile in Mass Effect, the Alliance was the place to be in the first game while Cerberus were murderous side-quest space nazis. Mass Effect 2 rolls around and the Alliance twiddles their thumbs while Cerberus get things done, only for the Alliance to wake up again in Mass Effect 3 while Cerberus turn full reaper-bots. BioWare's writing is light entertainment and often doesn't hold up to logic or reason. But no, none of my Hawkes ever sided with Meredith, she is just too batshit crazy. And to be honest, after reading the Band of Three codexes, my solution would not be to lock the mages up, but to evacuate this sorry excuse of a city and start somewhere new, where the veil isn't that frail. Has no one ever asked, why there are so many serial killers, murderous gangs, blood mages and crazy templars (did I forget something? Short tempered Qunari maybe...)in Kirkwall? Poor gameplay design. They needed a bunch of enemies to keep players busy with all the wave-based combat that infested the game, whether it made sense in a given situation or not. Remember how even the three hucksters that sell the fake ashes of Andraste lead to a big fight against several waves of outlaws jumping from the rooftops? That should have been a short conversation with a few options to resolve the matter, but instead it inexplicably led to a scene of wholesale slaughter in a side street. Also I vaguely remember a few posts by David Gaider somewhere stating that the Band of Three codexes were a late addition to Dragon Age 2 after they realized that almost all the mage characters they put into the game were dangerous nutters. They had kinda forgotten to add some sane mages, and this was the easiest "fix" or explanation they could think of. It should probably not be over-analyzed... in fact I suspect that some people in this thread and similar ones across the forum have put more reasonable thought into these story aspects that BioWare's writers themselves.

What is "gaming culture" supposed to be? When people pick up gaming as a hobby, they bring with them the culture they grew up in, the one that shaped them. This doesn't get overwritten because they have a new hobby now.
But this a useless debate anyway - anyone who paints any group of people with such a broad, generalizing brush doesn't have an opinion worth listening to, so why waste the effort on them?

He set off some warning bells, but I didn't care enough to investigate to be honest. I never paid much attention to elf related lore, so most of what he said just made me smile and nod, but all those helpful elven artifacts scattered about the landscape that apparently only he knew about were mighty convenient, weren't they...
I never expected him to be the Dread Wolf or anything like that. Not after all the times I had to revive him because he just had to run into melee or stood in that pool of acid/electricity/patch of fire without moving. Gods just ain't what they used to be.

I really like the OP's idea of combining a warrior's fortify armour ability with a mage's ice resistance spell. I'd like to see something like that in DA4.
Unfortunately however, BioWare's combo system has been simplified with almost every iteration to the point that some abilities are merely primers while others are detonators, causing extra damage with some boom and screen shake and the word COMBO jumping into your face a dozen times.
That said, I would prefer the combat system getting a complete overhaul to remove most of the "magic-like" abilities from warriors and rogues. They simply make very little sense in a setting where magic ability is rare and has such a huge effect on a person's life. It should stand out in gameplay too. Even non-magical abilities could create combos, like a warrior executing a flurry attack that opens multiple bleeding wounds and a mage casting some poison cloud at the poor sod or a rogue tossing a nasty powder at them. Just like the original ice resistance/armour fortification example, I would strongly prefer defined combo effects over a generic "prime and boom".

Old Liara might make a pretty good antagonist, similar to the first Mission Impossible movie or Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom.

Watching someone else play a game helps me decide whether it's something I really want to buy and play myself or a 60,-€ bullet to dodge. There's nothing like unedited gameplay for that.
I also watch short (~10 mins) Warframe videos to learn about synergies between certain weapons and warframes, how to solo kill certain bosses, etc. As much as I'd like to, I simply don't have the time to try and work out everything on my own.
Sometimes I'm tempted to watch streams of games that have an interesting story but which I definitely won't play myself because they're not on PC and I'm not going to buy a console for the two games that would interest me, but it generally turns out that I don't have time for that either.
The only streams I occasionally get around to watching are Digital Extremes playing new, unreleased Warframe content. I just like to see what they're working on, and it's obviously something I can't play myself. Yet.

"Challenge" to one person, is dreary drag to another. The main 'nerf' to titans they did is that the weak points are always attackable, instead of only when titans attack. This, in my huble opinion, only reduces the time needed to kill the titans, and not the difficulty of evading attacks. Hence, as such, the challenge was not decreased, but the time to kill was. Does this make them 'easier'? well, ultimately, yes. But mainly: Less bothersome, and that is what matters. But again, challenge is subjective. They sucked balls. I bet pitting players against three of them in the demo did a decent job sorting out the people who were looking for a more casual experience. I hated the robot, but the titans were utter annoyance. I remember the three titans from the demo. They were utterly unaware of arcane concepts such as line of sight, and once I'd found a place where none of them could see me, they were content to remain stationary and hurl their attacks at whatever rock was between me and them. I was free to take potshots at their vulnerable spots until they were all dead. I kinda pitied them (but not much). This was in fact one of the defining moments that formed my expectations of the game.

A gripping game about a small community terrorized by a creature that devours everything in its path. They try to stop it, but as it devours it can gain the ability to eat the residents themselves. If the flickering remains of an eaten resident can make it back to the center of the community they can regenerate and fight on, but ultimately either they manage to destroy the intruder or it eats everything and they die. Pac Man?

I'd rather not join anyone. With BioWare you never know which faction is next in line to be smacked about left and right with the stupid stick.
Now if you'd ask me which faction I'd rather want to give the finger and the boot, that would be another matter entirely...

It sure isn't "mixed" enough for Templars to have radio communication, which means they can't respond anywhere near quickly or effectively enough to magical crimes or disasters unless the mages are all gathered in one spot so everyone can be supervised at once. Which was my point. The City Guard don't have radios either to quickly respond to burglaries, murders or crimes in a city either? Doesn't mean they should start rounding up anyone who might commit a crime up under the guise of protection and preventing crimes before they happen.
To suggest that locking up potential criminals is necessary to ensure safety, one might as well turn the whole of Kirkwall or Denerim into giant prisons and be done with it, given how much rampant crime takes place within those cities.
What about police arresting terrorists before they crash that plane / bomb that building / drive into that crowd? There's a difference in quality and quantity between something so devastating and, say, some burglar or thug with a broken bottle.

Hm, there really aren't many MEA features that I'd want DA4 to pick up. Two things come to mind:
- The responsive combat. Jetpacks or not, MEA's gunplay is pretty enjoyable. I know it's hard to compare the combat design of games that play so differently, but I found MEA's combat quite fun while DAI's felt like a boring chore to me.
- The smaller party headquarters. Skyhold was pretty to look at, but all the jogging around to talk to the companions got old really fast, it had too many empty spaces and some roofs never got fixed. I much preferred the size and feel of the Tempest, which was a pleasant mobile home in space.

Ahem. They weren't even allowed to police themselves, as Lord Seeker Lambert and his cronies immediately went "Treason! Kill 'em all!" when the circle mages went as far as debating and voting a possibility of independence from the Chantry. As far as DAI is concerned, the 'real rebels' in Redcliffe (not those crazies in the Hinterlands) appeared to get along ok-ish until the renegade Templars prepared to attack them again and again - and Alexius started to mess with them as well to 'coerce' them into Venatori ranks. I haven't read the books and was only referring to DAI. If the mages had any interest in policing themselves, the Redcliffe bunch should at least have tried to put down the Hinterland crazies and anything else that might ruin the reputation of mages as a whole. But they didn't care at all and were too busy shuffling their feet after Fiona signed them off into slavery. The analogy is a bit lacking in my view. Of course nobody with basic survial instincts would help to exterminate their own kind or even make life worse for it. The fact that certain circle mages (like Keili) lack this instinct shows how brainwashed they are. Well, it's an analogy from my homeland (Germany), where "drying out a swamp" is not associated with extermination but with removing corruption. So the meaning is "if you mean to remove corruption, do not ask for the help of those who might be corrupt themselves". I think it works pretty well in that context.

Mages policing themselves failed in DAI. They "washed their hands" of the marauding apostates in the Hinterlands.

Travel to another location then head right back to Skyhold because it cleans up the mess inside the building. Then I walk around to collect all the experience points I can get. Once done, I talk with characters. Same here. It tends to be one very long talking session involving 12 characters or so. Something I'd run away from screaming IRL, LOL. This is the exact moment where my half a dozen attempts to replay the game died

Ah, the good old times when post release content was created by a full team instead of a skeleton crew.
I keep wondering how they thought this GAAS thing would work out for them. Constantly updating a game with new features and content keeps an entire studio busy, even when they are very familiar with the engine and the base game doesn't have more bugs than Klendathu.

I think that the date of gameplay release, if any, depends on whether BioWare wants any fan input about it. Some people, especially game journalists recently, have stated that developers should ignore fan feedback - which is fine with me, since I'm not forced to buy their products and am more than happy to vote with my wallet.
If they do want player feedback on gameplay, they should release it early enough to make some adjustments if necessary.
If they don't want any feedback, just before release is fine so it can help making a purchase decision.
If they don't release any gameplay footage at all I'd probably just extrapolate from the franchise's general trend in that aspect.
I voted six months. Unless BioWare's company culture changes drastically, the lion's share of the work will be done about 18 months before release anyway...

In my opinion:1)they love the genre 2)they love what they have seen on the 50 min gameplay for god's sakes 3)some people love guns 4)love the possible story telling in that universe since it is CDPR developing it. 5) It looked like Deus Ex on steroids. 6) it's not coming from a GAASsy publisher known for surprise mechanics.
