I don't get why people thought the game was SJW overreach.

Because some people just can't stand the idea that video games are now for more demographics than just straight white men.

The only thing that annoyed me was the asari rewrite of their lore. However being upset because something/someone isn't the gender/sexuality you want them to be is a bit ridiculous. Oh, and FYI OP there's been an outrage over this shit on every game with a transgender/gay character for what the past 7 years? maybe longer.

This didn't annoy me but I didn't think it made any kind of sense.  Others argue differently but it doesn't fit with any damn codex entry I read on the asari in the MET.  Since, in terms of where the asari fit in their personal timelines, it takes place "during" ME2, it's weird.  Now, if literally 600 years of active life had taken place, and maybe humans influenced some asari on gender issues, then I could buy it.  A new race coming onto the scene in a big way could, over the course of several centuries, have an impact on those they encounter.

The asari in the cultural center can be overheard discussing gender pronouns with the angara ambassador. She basically says that the gender binary seen in other species doesn't apply to them, and when asked if she was offended by being referred to as female she responded that she didn't mind personally, but some asari prefer male or gender-neutral pronouns.

There is no mention of any asari actually identifying as male. I figure it was just a previously unmentioned quirk that they developed from two thousand years of interacting with various sexually dimorphic races. Besides, they're ambassadors; navigating potential diplomatic mindfields like that is literally what they're paid to do.
