You're blind-sighted if you can easily ignore the reaction Andromeda got upon release. There are still heavily-viewed videos out on YouTube where the masses came together to laugh, poke fun and even mercilessly insult the game, and they were right to do so. These vids have more views than the trailers do. BioWare cut the game off short after release. It was in the junk bins at game stores a month after release. But OH NO, that's an inaccurate measure of success because I know 10 very passionate Andromeda fans on these forums!!! You've never talked to an Andromeda fan haven't you? They aren't very common so its hard to find one to talk to.

I've seen MEA fans on Facebook, Twitter, and other forums.
Also the game has gotten very high reviews on Steam by new players, and on some days it's best reviewed of all 4 games, and there are plenty of more recent YouTube videos that have been more positive in re-appraising MEA.

To return this thread to the topic -
Should it be? No, it should be whatever the devs and writers want it to be AND can flesh out as a properly engaging story.
Can it be? Absolutely. MEA didn't kill anything, other than enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is actually easy to get back, as is momentum, but there has to be a spark.
Will it be? Sorta. If the new game doesn't bridge the galaxies I will be shocked.

I agree, but the problem is that doesn't fit the narrative people want to spin. Especially when trying to prove that BioWare should change the setting to accommodate their desires.

I agree, Ubisoft has proven that every time they screw up one of their franchises and with the next game it has a slow start, but if its a good game the word of mouth causes the sales to increase. I can easily see that happening with Mass Effect, especially since I am not sure how much the online conversation really represents people since I have seen plenty of people chased off since Mass Effect 3 because it wasn't bashing the games.

I believe the next ME game will be more aligned with the OT and the Milky Way rather than MEA. I also see it being more of a soft reboot in the same way PS4 God of War was.
E3 2021 hopefully should answer some of these basic questions.
The teaser didnt show Andromeda, it didn't show Ryder. It didnt have anything related to MEA or its enemies. Instead all the background chatter was related to the OT such as the Reaper horn and the dead reaper in the background. Then there was Liara who gathered a N7 logo....not an Andromeda Initiative logo.
It is clear to me that Bioware wants to start fresh and move away from MEA and start anew by aligning more with the OT.

The trailer did show the Andromeda galaxy. The teaser as well as many tweets heavily imply a sequel to both, but maybe only one could be a sequel (this leans more on Andromeda with all the hints before NME development started and now). There's voices from andromeda like the one who says "Is anyone receiving this, we've lost contact". Then afterwards we hear "the anomaly readings are on the process", an angara saying "set probe, delay". The n7 logo mostly means that the the franchise is off from the ice. Could also be about shepard but that's a very small chance. As for Ryder, it has been implied and mostly confirmed it is. Bioware also released a key image on their blog post after the teaser: i.imgur.com/ob2LS0S.jpg

Bioware also released a key image on their blog post after the teaser: i.imgur.com/ob2LS0S.jpgThere one problem with your theory. Which is that it is clear in the background where Liara is walking that there is a dead reaper. Hell, I think she is walking on a dead reaper herself. Last I checked, was no reapers in Andromeda galaxy. So if that is Ryder, then that means he/she transported back to the Milky Way which wouldn't make sense cause returning to the milky way would make MEA essentially irrelevant (which I don't mind). Also the "we lost contact" was immediately followed by a Reaper noise and not something related to MEA. And finally there is Liara. Technically as an Asari she could travel to Andromeda in real time and survive the whole journey which would make her about 700 years old. Considering she looks older in the trailer, that could be a possibility. But that also brings up Ryder. If Liara traveled to Andromeda after ME3, 600 years would have passed and by the time she got to Andromeda Ryder would be dead. So no, that image cannot be Ryder. It is possible that ME4 could indeed be a sequel to both ME3 and MEA, but I highly doubt we would be playing as Ryder again. Most likely possibility is that this game takes place hundreds of years into the Milky Way future in which the galaxy is rebuilding. Think of it as a post apocalyptic game but in a space setting.

Except that the devs hinted that they plan on merging both galaxies. Yes and I do not argue against that. I do believe ME4 will have connections to both Andromeda and Milky Way. My argument is that we will be playing as a new hero. Not Shepard and not Ryder.

I doubt they would do that. There would be call backs to Andromeda but Bioware/EA is smart enough to know where the ME bread and butter is. The OT fanbase is way larger then that of the MEA fanbase. Explicitly showing Liara with dead reapers in the background is a clear indication for the messaging Bioware is trying to send. They could have shown an MEA character but they did not. They could have shown an Andromeda Initiative logo but they did not, instead they showed N7. They could have shown Kett enemies in the background but instead they showed Reapers. Again, I believe there will be some connections with MEA but I really believe Bioware will lean heavily into the OT when it comes to this new ME game. Bioware could have used the money and resources to make some post release content for MEA but instead they choose to do a OT remaster. Again, showing where their priorities are.

The story has to start in either the Milky Way or the Andromeda galaxy, and given that Andromeda only shows up in the opening shot of the two galaxies while dead reapers and Liara are shown prominently later in the trailer, I would hazard a guess and say that the Milky Way is the starting point. And if they really wanted to involve Andromeda from there, they would have to completely trivialize the distance and travel time between the two galaxies.
I wouldn't be overly surprised if they actually did that, I personally just wouldn't like it very much because making 2.5 million light years a small step for a man would essentially remove space from a space story for me.
Then again, BioWare occasionally teases things that then get forgotten about. Anyone remember Hawke going to Weisshaupt or being really important to Seeker Cassandra? Yeah.

Merging the two galaxies is simply too much. Maybe in the future, a transmission from Andromeda finally reaches some sort of FTL comm buoy. Of course, even Liara wouldn't live to see that, since a return transmission would be hundreds of years on top of the 600 to get to Andromeda in the first place.

Those same people also used to believe MEA would get SP DLC and that Bioware/EA would not abandon Anthem....

It seems that both galaxies stories will merge but there's something going on (story related) that it's gonna include both galaxies. The we've lost contact could be from the mw but it's more possible it is andromeda related. The Ai can't communicate with the mw, since they don't know about the reaper attack except Ryder. It could also be about the ark keelah siyah since they couldn't communicate with them. The image is Ryder. Gamble said to a member of the team "But who's on the background? You know but the world doesn't, but can they figure it out, who knows?". This definitely implies it's someone we know. The suit is the Pathfinder one, you'll notice the helmet has full glass, also the collar. Nobody else wore this suit in andromeda, only ryder so it definitely is them. Also the animation director liked a tweet that mentioned this. I don't turn down the possibility to play with a new one, but i don't exclude to play with Ryder either until we see otherwise.
