Well from all the reviews I've seen, the complaints are universal, bad facial animations and bugs galore. Does not bode well. ,.-~*´¨¯¨`*·~-.¸-(_MEA_)-,.-~*´¨¯¨`*·~-.¸
Bugs, will get fixed. Gamble twitted a while back he was triaging them. Facial animation, like hair, is an in-your-face experience and can't be easily swept under the rug. Also, I'm interested in knowing which build version the reviewer used since she mentioned there were lots of crashes and graphic glitches. The PCs were "solid" which I interpret as high-end CPU+GPU wise.
Did EA allowed them access to an older build so that EA/Bio could surprise up with the production version? Is EA/Bio so confident that they can fix the facial oddities and the major bugs by March 21st? Has anyone ever heard/seen a publisher do that before?
Moving on.
Combat is automatic cover based Video starting @0:10:10. When you are behind cover it "locks you in". This is very familiar and I am not a fan. Last, I like the fact that there is banter during combat and that the characters talk to each other.

To be honest the talk of fixing the animations wasn't all that long ago, so I wasn't expecting for it to be fixed by the time these previews came out.
Though I'm also seeing in a decent number of reviews talk about performance issues. PC gamer noted that even on BioWare's testing PC that they let the press use, the FPS dropped below 30 in crowded areas and sometimes in the Nomad.
Of course they said the game was also probably running at 4k, and there is only one video card on the market capable of even considering 60 FPS @ 4k right now. I'd like to see how the game runs at 1080p and 1440p on PC.

The best facial animation I've seen is Witcher 3, Yakuza 0 (the high rez cut-scenes are insane), and Uncharted 4 in that order. Most games facial animation is a huge step down from that. True. Don't know about Yakuza but Uncharted and most of all the Witcher 3 are amazing on that regard. Anyway, it's not that bad as the OP is saying. ps: Besides Horizon is really not a exemple of good facial animations or good character dialogue. Good lord, on MEA Gameplay from December at least the faces move... Also what is this dialogue lmao Dude: I'll kill myself before I hurt you sister, bye Sister: Yeah so Aloy as I was saying...

Welcome to the series since Mass Effect 2. Word. Still I hold out hope. This is all based off a preview build that people tested? If so then more likely than not it was full of bugs and glitches. In my opinion these people who tested this "preview-build" more likely than not were given the December version that Bioware employees took home and tested. Never seen Bioware drop all their cards till the final moment. Well I will hold out that these things may actually get fixed in final version. If not I still going to give it a run and further more if I need it better -it will be made better. -MOD4EVER.

All I'm hoping at this point is that Sara Ryder won't walk and sit like a man... Anyone remember that scene between Femshep and Garrus in ME2 where she was sitting on a bench in the Main Battery room? That was just horrible... No more of that, please!

I guess some people don't know the meaning of 'improve' .
Improve - to make or become better
So if Bioware "promised to improve facial animations" then they certainly did not lie. They DID improve them. Are they top tier shit? Probably not, but seriously who the fuck cares? If you sit there and tell me that sub par facial animation is going to ruin the game for you then I really dont understand how you enjoyed the last 3 Mass Effect games. Talk about shallow.

Bioware was never the best at facial animations, their especiality was always story telling and character development, but they are far from the worse and they did make some improvements between the videos they already showed.

OP, you missed by far the most worrying point for me. They said in their article that there are significant performance problems in terms of framerates and freezes possibly. The first thing that a game should do is work properly, and performance issues aren't something you can fix overnight, it took DA:I one year after release to address them. They also mentioned plenty of graphical glitches and a broken quest, but that should be fixed pretty easily for the most part. Pretty animations and perfect character models come almost dead last on my priority list.

A lot of the reviews failed to mention that bioware had told them upfront that over 5000 bugs had been fixed after they made this build they are testing on. One youtuber even included a screenshot of bioware confirming that most of the bugs he was complaining about were already set to be fixed in a day 1 patch. (Facial animations being one of them.) here's the proof: link

I have to disagree with all of the "Bioware has always struggled with facial animation, this is much ado about nothing" posts.
While it's true that Bioware has never been particularly good with facial animations, the wonky facial animations we've seen in ME:A trailers actually looks worse than ME3 or DA:I. Shepard's horrifying smile only appeared in one scene, in one game. We've now seen multiple creepy smiles from Ryder, and the game isn't even released yet. It does not bode well if bad animations are something previews are zeroing in on either.

There's criticism and then there's hyperbole. I mean, The Sims 3, seriously? Take a look at the newest cast reveal video (Game of Thrones actress, what's her name?) and tell me this looks anywhere near The Sims 3... They actually look pretty great.

Does Horizon have squadmates? Dialogue between characters for hours? A whole galaxy to explore? No? Then shut up and Im not buying Pocahontas vs robot dinosaurs 11/10 Would also bang. Oh wait. Funny Thing that's what my pops used to look like when I was a kid. Now he just looks like Ron Swanson On the flip side, if the facial animations in Horizon are being criticized as poor or weird, then fuck yeah, I'll be okay with Andromeda if it looks like that (that good).

Such a huge difference between the trailer and ... that. If people only watch the trailer before buying they are going to be so mad. Think it was pretty evident that HZD would have flaws, of which the obvious one would be facial animations (could even see that from some of the trailers), but it's just something you look past. No game is perfect and i'll be perfectly happy to sit through some terrible voice acting / facial animations if it means I get to play a game of H:ZD's scope, even if by all accounts most of the side missions are rinse and repeat akin to Assassin's Creed. That same mantra applies to Andromeda too. Besides H:ZD will keep me occupied before ME:A.

They're OK because they mostly limit themselves to a smirk or a slight frown. ME:A's animations seem more expressive and ambitious, but this means that they sometimes "fail" harder

"Oh no, the world is falling, the world is falling." *shameless pandering to Horizon Zero Dawn* Did I translate that properly, OP? Nice try. Actually, after watching that cutscene someone else posted from Horizon Zero Dawn, I changed my mind - the facial animations (and voice acting) are pretty bad... so just revise the OP to say Uncharted 4 instead of Horizon Zero Dawn. The point is, good facial animation can help make a game great - bad facial animation (while not game breaking) is disappointing after 5 years of development. Anyone know how long Uncharted 4 took to make? Just curious. And before you say "it's apples and oranges!" I'm not saying I expect Naughty Dog level skill from Bioware. I'm just saying I had hoped they would make significant improvement to the facial animation from DAI, which, to be honest, I don't think is as bad as the disarm cutscene they showed in the trailer. DAI wasn't great, but it wasn't creepy and bizarrely jarring like MEA so far.
