"Oh no, the world is falling, the world is falling." *shameless pandering to Horizon Zero Dawn* Did I translate that properly, OP? Nice try. Actually, after watching that cutscene someone else posted from Horizon Zero Dawn, I changed my mind - the facial animations (and voice acting) are pretty bad... so just revise the OP to say Uncharted 4 instead of Horizon Zero Dawn. The point is, good facial animation can help make a game great - bad facial animation (while not game breaking) is disappointing after 5 years of development. Anyone know how long Uncharted 4 took to make? Just curious. And before you say "it's apples and oranges!" I'm not saying I expect Naughty Dog level skill from Bioware. I'm just saying I had hoped they would make significant improvement to the facial animation from DAI, which, to be honest, I don't think is as bad as the disarm cutscene they showed in the trailer. DAI wasn't great, but it wasn't creepy and bizarrely jarring like MEA so far. It's also a lot easier to do great facial animations when your game has a fraction of the amount of characters MEA has, with the majority of Uncharted 4 being set pieces, to linear exploration, to mediocre 3rd person shooting. Mass Effect Andromeda is far more ambitious than Uncharted 4 in a wide variety of ways. I know everybody loves to get on the Naughty Dog bandwagon, but they are no different than Crystal Dynamics on the Tomb Raider reboot series specializing in a very small area and doing it very well. I actually haven't found the character animations to be that terrible in most of the footage shown. There have been a few isolated incidents, but for the most part it's fine. We already know that there's also going to be a final build patch as well as a day one patch that further improves the facial animations of characters. The game isn't done yet.

I can deal with bad animation, but not if it's distracting as MEA's seems to be. Those awful eyes make it even worse. Those eyes give me the creeps: The pictures are from the MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA – Voicing Dr Lexi T'Perro video. There are more: imgur.com/a/6IA9cEdit: Some old ME1 Shepard pictures: imgur.com/a/hMHxYI hope they make everybody more lively in MEA, because right now they are drunk and/or dead and/or cross eyed. The lights also wrongly falls on the eyes, or gleaming poorly.

The best facial animation I've seen is Witcher 3, Yakuza 0 (the high rez cut-scenes are insane), and Uncharted 4 in that order. Most games facial animation is a huge step down from that. The facial animations in Halo 4 and 5 are fucking divine. Halo 4 is especially impressive since it's a last-gen game that came out just 7 months after ME3. Yeah, they really nail it with Master Chief.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I really don't care about facial animations that much, or if default Ryder looks odd (I personally think both defaults we have seen look great). I understand that awful facial animations can be distracting, but from what I have seen it does not seem they would be distracting to me. I know other people have other tolerances, so some might actually be totally distracted from a less-than-perfectly animated face. I was watching some videos from ME3 recently and realized that the lip sync is really off, but I never really noticed it in game. I guess maybe growing up playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Ocarina of Time has made me less sensitive to those kinds things.
Is anyone else not worried about facial animations? Like if they looked exactly the same in the finished game as they have in the promotional material, would you be ok with that? I would.

As most people here I genuinely couldn't care less about facial animations. In a list of all the important things I care about a game, facial animations don't even make it into that list.
I want a good story, that's all. The combat looks decent at least, and I haven't seen something I particularly dislike about the map design and I wouldn't worry about map design either, I'm sure it's great if they kept Inquisition standards, my only worry here is emptiness.
For what I've seen in the last video I think combat passed in my test, I just want good story and good quests, that's all. And of course, no jackshit terrible performance on PC, or else...

Yeah, they really nail it with Master Chief. You jest, but they did a superb job animating Master Chief's body language to convey emotion. It's subtle, but very effective.

All I can honestly say is "Duh!"
Of course Aaryn was making a PR move when he said "We'll fix those bugs". It ain't no bug. It's just bad animation and you can't just fix it if your animation tech, procedure, your animator, whatever aren't up to snuff in the first place.
The thing that people seem to not be getting which is really puzzling me, is that we aren't complaining because the animations don't look improved, we aren't complaining because everything looks so good now that "the old animations" look bad.
No, no and no. It's complaint-worthy because it looks worse than ever. ME1, 2 and 3 did not look even close to this bad when it came to fully hand-animated facial expressions in special scenes or the moment-to-moment algorithmically based dialogue system. There's a sign here that Montreal is not quite as competent or something. They've attempted to upgrade their animation pipeline or rework it from scratch but made it worse than ever before.

I'm not expecting too much from ME:A tbh, I'm assuming an overall average / mediocre game. (who knows I might be positively surprised... Nah, who am I kidding...) I'm more impressed that IGN is providing actual criticism rather than the usual 10/10 IGN! They were not paid to do the review this time Talking about IGN though, I'd pick anything they say with tweezers. If I want a good review I sure as hell not gonna listen to IGN.

Relax. If the gaming press can gush about a game that has this shit in it: Then I wouldn't worry too much. Nah, Horizon is getting a pass because it's a new IP, you play a cool looking chick and it's not made by EA/BioWare. The reviews I read for the game were hilarious. Especially, the one where the reviewer claims the game version of the Witcher's sense/batvision was his favorite feature and super innovative... Reading a few reviews made me wonder if all the reviewers played the same game too (contradicting stuff about the combat being clunky and super smooth at the same time). I suspect MEA is going to get destroyed by the haters, if they are official reviewers or not is another story. I mean, I already saw someone on these forums complaining that BioWare dared turn Mass Effect into an action shooter...it wasn't sarcasm.

After being almost universally ridiculed for having atrocious facial animations in one of the earlier trailers So in other words, you're not going to even care about differing opinions in this thread because you don't even acknowledge opinions other than the one you hold exist in the first place. Why would she care about anyone else's opinion on this subject?
If I think the animations are bad. They're bad. You disagreeing doesn't make them any less bad in my eyes.

The funny part is that Mass Effect has always been an action shooter with a few RPG elements and a lot of dialogue and story. Arguably even the first one was that, except with bad action shooting mechanics.

I have this to say: calling something "Disney" is not a compliment. Not if you have worked for them.
There is a reason we call it, working for the "Big Rat".
Science fiction should not be cartoony/Disney, in my biased, accurate, nuanced, position of hate.
That said, I don't think the characters look cartoonish... They just look meh.

I guess not... I just suspect they are either trolls hungry for attention or they are delusional.

Using still shots that are from an active animation really isn't a fair representation of the quality. Take a series of snapshots of your own face while in the process of smiling or frowning or laughing and you will find some very homely looking faces that could creep anybody out, which is why people take a bazillion photos to get the "good one".
I don't get all the hate, it's not that bad, and it's definitely not as bad as ME:3. That's not to say that I thought ME:3 was particularly bad, but the characters do have a plastic feel about them, especially around the mouth and eyes. I don't go into Bioware games expecting to be blown away by the facial expressions. I mean, I know they have limitations when it comes to the scope they're trying to cover while still maintaining quality graphics.
It may not be a huge improvement, but it certainly isn't cause for losing our proverbial **** over the game and whether it's worth buying. I loved the original trilogy despite the fact that they couldn't figure out how to properly render triceps. It's not that big of a deal and I find I like their attempt to put more emotion into the characters. Yeah, it still has an awkwardness to it, but it's an improved awkwardness. Instead of lifeless characters they're expressive and while it might not always capture what they're going for, I can interpret it just fine and that makes me happier than if they hadn't tried at all.

So long as we get animations closer to DA:I than ME3 (not that DA:I was spectacular, but it was good enough for me not to complain) then I'm ok. I just don't want Anderson's Nut-Cracker level of wooden face, and closer to Sera's facial animations (which were pretty good, if not anywhere close to spectacular.)
