Ehh. ME1 was also a shooter I guess but it felt much more like an adventure game with a shooter component than the Gears of War clone it later turned into with 2 and 3... especially 3 and its overlong and purely action-based levels with the occasional non-interactive cutscenes. It's complaint-worthy because it looks worse than ever. ME1, 2 and 3 did not look even close to this bad Um, MEA looks better than ME1, 2 and 3. True story. ...In screenshots and in raw gameplay (aka combat). Whenever you have moments of heavy emotionally charged scenes and animation it becomes debatable. The graphics is better. The cinematography and consistency of well-directed scenes peaked in ME2 IMO, so I'm not holding my breath since that fell off a cliff in ME3 (despite notably good ones here and there). It's hit and miss. The facial animation system just looks worse than ever though, whenever it's not a full face performance thing that looks as it should. We've got three shots. 2 of Sara and 1 of Scott. Both with Sara looked off and Scott looked okay doing the "HNNGG!" thing.

I feel like people saying MEA looks godawful have never seen godawful in their lives. Not even close.
It's also a sign of lack of perspective.

Didn't ME1 perform like shit, and in fact STILL performs like shit on the PC? It's graphics weren't that remarkable at the time, the game had bugs, the loot system was a cluttered mess, it had reused side quest maps, and the combat was terrible. Yet people overlooked those flaws, and let's admit those are some heavy flaws, because they enjoyed the rest of the game. I feel like gamers have gotten so much harder to please these days.
Thank god ME1 released at the time that it did. If it came out today, the Mass Effect series wouldn't be a thing.

Not one reviewer from IGN even mentioned anything about the sub-par facial animations in Horizon dawn zero, why is that? I mean if MEA's facials are considered bad, then I don't know what I would call Horizons... funny that.

What's this talk about ME:A having worse animations than the original trilogy? You do know that the trilogy DIDN'T EVEN HAVE facial animations? Well, almost. Everyone was limited, at best, to slight smirks or barely present expressions of whatever basic emotions. Whenever the games tried to emote a bit more, we were immediately transported into a horror dimension of creepy laughs.
Animations in Andromeda, whatever one may think of them, seem to be far more ambitious.

Thank god ME1 released at the time that it did. If it came out today, the Mass Effect series wouldn't be a thing. ME1 wont even run without crashing for more than about 30 minutes on my PC anymore. Being too lazy to work out what's wrong with it in my replaying of the trilogy before ME:A I just downloaded a ME1 save with 100% completion and the choices that I wanted, then imported that into ME2. Also as long as we're on the topic of bugs, ME2's cover system has some moments of being really bad between some cover that give you a horrible camera angle that can't see anything, cover that you can't shoot out of, and cover where upon returning to cover your character flips even further out of cover and then slides back into the proper place. If I remember right it gets a bit better later on, but those first few missions can be awful for cover mechanics. While I think gamers can be unreasonable at times I also think it's good that we've pushed devs to have mechanics that aren't so clunky. I doubt if I would be much of a Mass Effect fan if it played like KotoR did, which I generally regard as the second worst combat mechanics I've ever seen in a game next to an unmodded Morrowind. I think if ME1 came out today we'd see much better combat in it anyway. Gears of War kind of showed everybody how to properly do cover based shooting and we've just been running with that ever since. Mass Effect 1 just barely slipped by, having been too far into development to change it when GoW came out.

Sometimes I'm a bit slow in the head, but as far as I can tell this simply means: wait a little bit after launch to play the game. Which is good advice for every AAA game in the last 5 years.

Yeah. I was about to say that ME1 was an action shooter, just a really BAD one. Thankfully, BioWare actually brought on some talent that salvaged that horrific gameplay. You'd think folks would be happy so much of the RPG progression from ME1 is coming back into MEA. I guess not... I just suspect they are either trolls hungry for attention or they are delusional. Trolls will do anything for five minutes of attention. No reason to get worried about them. Yeah, I'm a troll for making a post about a legitimate concern brought up during a preview of the game. *rolls eyes* YOU may not care if the facial animations look goofy/creepy, but SOME people do. That doesn't make them trolls. Bioware should release an updated clip of the infamous, cringe-worthy disarm scene to prove to skeptics and concerned fans that they actually HAVE improved the facial animations. That would shut me up.

What's the status of Numenera? My enthusiasm took a hit after seeing the price tag. Were there other grim news? No early reviews until the day of. No previews and almost no marketing or attempts to hype anyone. They tried to hide cut goals, companions, content, character creation content, and more from the backers. It took dataminers some hard digging and a week or two of angry people wanting refunds before they fessed up to only some of the BS. And apologized. Then the press got hold of it, and then the next wave of cut stuff was found they still haven't responded to. It's not looking great for that game. I hope I'm wrong and the game I backed turns out great, but I doubt it. Does anyone actually do pre-release reviews anymore? Anyway, I hadn't heard about all this, so I took a look. Honestly, doesn't seem that much of a problem to me, and I say that as a backer. It all seems about within the realm of normal changes during development. And if there's missing stuff that they add later, I'll get it for free. The only thing that's a little disappointing is cut companions, but I'm inclined to believe their assertion that their time/word budget was better spent fleshing out 7 instead of 9 companions. I've found this to be true in past games. Previews are all good so far though, so that's a hopeful sign. A little less optimistic for Andromeda though. Which is annoying, because they were just increasing my hype with the gameplay reveals. They allayed my primary concern about limited active powers, and it looks fun. Likewise encouraged by the changes to the dialogue system. But then there are the previews talking about poor performance and animations, making me remember that this was the same team that made the buggy-as-hell Omega DLC. Also sounds like auto-dialogue is making a raging comeback, so I'm probably going to have to treat this game more like Witcher, with a semi-set protagonist. Which isn't a deal-breaker, since I loved the Witcher, but it's also not what I look for in BioWare games. What has me most tepid though is that it sounds like they are in fact going with the "empty wasteland, devoid of interesting content" approach, like DA:I. Clear bandits. Fetch item. Press button. Gather ore. Can't wait for this current open world craze to die down.

A comment on aesthetic quality is one of the most subjective opinions there is. What does "cartoony" even mean? Disney. In what universe do you live where being compared to Disney animation is a bad thing?

The best facial animation I've seen is Witcher 3, Yakuza 0 (the high rez cut-scenes are insane), and Uncharted 4 in that order. Most games facial animation is a huge step down from that. Yup, honestly though as long as the facial animations are acceptable I'm all good. Also Horizon Zero Dawn can't be compared to this game.

Now that Bioware has allowed a more in-depth look at the first few hours of the game, previews are starting to come in. After being almost universally ridiculed for having atrocious facial animations in one of the earlier trailers, Bioware promised to improve them. Well, it seems like that was an empty promise. According to IGN, it's still bad: "I couldn’t shake the feeling that the Ryders, and some of the supporting human characters, look a whole lot more like they walked out of The Sims 3, rather than walking out of a game releasing in 2017. Their eyes, eyelashes, and mouths specifically look particularly cartoony, with some awkward dialogue animations." Ok, now watch the trailer for Horizon Zero Dawn: Check out those facial animations. Pretty impressive, huh? Well according to Kotaku's review, that game was criticized for having "poor facial animations". If *that's* what is considered "poor" by game reviewers, imagine how badly received Andromeda will be... More importantly, the cutscenes will be cringeworthy. Every time we have to sit through Sara's creepy, plastic-y grimace of a smile, we will feel let down because it breaks immersion. I had hoped Bioware would fix it before launch, but, according to the previews, it doesn't seem to be the case. Is anyone else concerned? I'll end on a positive note: IGN also said there were some "unconventional and bizarre" hairstyle in the CC, which is exciting because Bioware normally gives us bland, ugly hairstyles That one cutscene that everyone blathered about historically has been confirmed fixed by other previews. Code Red averted, maybe change your hyperbolic thread title brah.

Relax. If the gaming press can gush about a game that has this shit in it: Then I wouldn't worry too much. The real question is, if they can gush about something this bad yet critique ME:A, how bad is ME:A? Tbf the recent peebee "smile" scene looked even worse than it did in the trailer in 2016 and that was godawful as it was Since when has PB's smiling ever been a problem?

I've heard some comments from the previews that Bioware claimed that since build the Press played, they squashed 5000 bugs. Not overly surprising, considering that bug fixing would be an ongoing thing, there's no way they could keep updating the preview build time and time again whilst they bug fix. There would have simply been a disclaimer before the press played stating this is a demo build and that there are things they have fixed/actively working on fixing. By all accounts that is what they've done, as whats that's been reported by a few different sources.
