Now that Bioware has allowed a more in-depth look at the first few hours of the game, previews are starting to come in. After being almost universally ridiculed for having atrocious facial animations in one of the earlier trailers, Bioware promised to improve them. Well, it seems like that was an empty promise. According to IGN, it's still bad: "I couldn’t shake the feeling that the Ryders, and some of the supporting human characters, look a whole lot more like they walked out of The Sims 3, rather than walking out of a game releasing in 2017. Their eyes, eyelashes, and mouths specifically look particularly cartoony, with some awkward dialogue animations." Ok, now watch the trailer for Horizon Zero Dawn: Check out those facial animations. Pretty impressive, huh? Well according to Kotaku's review, that game was criticized for having "poor facial animations". If *that's* what is considered "poor" by game reviewers, imagine how badly received Andromeda will be... More importantly, the cutscenes will be cringeworthy. Every time we have to sit through Sara's creepy, plastic-y grimace of a smile, we will feel let down because it breaks immersion. I had hoped Bioware would fix it before launch, but, according to the previews, it doesn't seem to be the case. Is anyone else concerned? I'll end on a positive note: IGN also said there were some "unconventional and bizarre" hairstyle in the CC, which is exciting because Bioware normally gives us bland, ugly hairstyles

I hear there are PC performance issues, and some people were not impressed with the setting/story. If we don't get full early reviews we know it's like 75% chance of being mediocre to merely acceptable. I'm disappointed in Bioware and the Torment Tides of Numenera team. I hope I'm wrong on both accounts, but I doubt it. It's super rare for no early reviews to lead to a good game.

That sucks, but, in all fairness, H:ZD doesn't look impressive in this area as well. Still better than the infamous disarming scene.

He said almost, meaning there's some room to maneuver. I tend to agree with the OP however, facial animations were dreadful and still are if we look at the latest content from the video of Dr. Lexi. No way they'll be able to fix this in time. Ian said on twitter that the version played by the previewers has been polished since, but the animation I've seen in the latest videos is downright appalling and will prove quite a challenge for the coming weeks.

They tried to hide cut goals, companions, content, character creation content, and more from the backers. It took dataminers some hard digging and a week or two of angry people wanting refunds before they fessed up to only some of the BS. And apologized. Then the press got hold of it, and then the next wave of cut stuff was found they still haven't responded to. It's not looking great for that game. I hope I'm wrong and the game I backed turns out great, but I doubt it.

Being concerned over Bioware games having slightly clunky facial animations now and then is like being worried a glass of water you're about to drink might be a bit moist.
They've always been less than perfect on that end, but the finished products have always had mostly fine animations outside of a handful of scenes like Sheploo looking like a sex offender. Is there room for improvement? Yes. Is it a big deal? No.

"Bioware promised to improve them.
Well, it seems like that was an empty promise."
Did they ? I remember one guy of bioware saying the game was not in a pre-rendered state and not final but I did not see a promise.
That being said, bad animation can indeed break the immersion. I was pretty proud of my lady inquisitor in DA;I after the CC. Then she started to speak... However if like good animation, a bad one did not stop me from playing mass effect games several times. It is a downside of course, but an expected one with a ton of good thing than can compensate it. Tbh, the lazy level design of the first 3 mass effect was a bigger issue in term of immersion.

Oh the sheer fucking irony, one of the main complaints about Horizon: Zero Dawn is about it's poor facial animations.

Just of the bit we have seen I can see the negative comments about this. I think things like animations, especially face ones become tough when scanning facial images. This is just another ting that I will quickly get used to and not worry about though. As long as BioWare does the things well that they normally do well I'll be happy.

The best facial animation I've seen is Witcher 3, Yakuza 0 (the high rez cut-scenes are insane), and Uncharted 4 in that order. Most games facial animation is a huge step down from that.

He was a backer, so he was obviously pissed. I'm withholding my money until I get some good news

Regarding facial animation.
I'm giving them a pass. It's their first experience with full facial motion capture and transferring it into a cinematic canvas. It's a crude effort, so far and the polishing seems to have no effect. However, the game build used is pre-production. Keep that in mind.

Don't know about Yakuza but Uncharted and most of all the Witcher 3 are amazing on that regard. Anyway, it's not that bad as the OP is saying. ps: Besides Horizon is really not a exemple of good facial animations or good character dialogue.

I'll end on a positive note: IGN also said there were some "unconventional and bizarre" hairstyle in the CC, which is exciting because Bioware normally gives us bland, ugly hairstyles I think I might have to NOPE out of here Bioware also said "Don't worry, we'll have unconventional styles available" for DA:I, and guess what we ended up with? THIS. Which is almost all unconventional or ugly. We actually need more conventional styles again.

It's much, much easier to do facial animations in pre-rendered cutscenes, with actors that never change (No PC to muddle the waters), for a relatively short FPS campaign. That said, the few previews I've seen do tend to say Andromeda's animations are mediocre. Which is a shame, and I really hope they're not so bad as to be distracting.
