Truer words have never been spoken. I managed to average ~6 hours a day for 8 years. That's regular second job. And it's nothing compared to *truly* hardcore top-tier raiders. Well, I just applied to Activision Blizzard, so I'd love to know. Well in that case hit your friend group up for someone that plays WoW and tell them you are interested in playing. There is a promotion called "Recruit a Friend" that gives significant experience bonuses and other bonuses to both players. Particularly if you play together consistently. People in my pvp guild actually spent money on new accounts just to do that. They managed to level in a matter of hours, instead of weeks. >.< (They are crazy though, some higher end pvpers are, just... well. Awesome, but nuts. ) *** Actually as I write this I have no idea if it's still being offered in Legion. Haven't checked in years.

Well, I just applied to Activision Blizzard, so I'd love to know. You can pick up a free trial that lets you play up to a certain level. Used to be 20 but I have no idea what it is now or if they are still doing free trials. Regardless it should be super cheap to pick up a version of the game and tinker with it for a better understanding. I bet someone on these forums would be more than happy to send you a refer a friend thingy and get you started.

If you value life and sunshine, don't. Truer words have never been spoken. I managed to average ~6 hours a day for 8 years. That's regular second job. And it's nothing compared to *truly* hardcore top-tier raiders. I can't really speak for today's raiders but I know back in Wrath my raiding guild really only actually raided one night a week and we managed to down heroic Lich King. It was mostly those competing for world firsts that needed to sink incredible amounts of time into the game every time a new raid came out, but the rest of us could get away with pretty casual play. Outside of that all I really had to do was show up, as somebody else in the guild covered things needed for raiding like consumables. I'm pretty sure that guy actually replaced sleep with herbalism in his daily routine. Of course if one wants to, there is certainly enough there to sink 6 hours a day into and that's exactly what I did back then =P

I can't really speak for today's raiders but I know back in Wrath my raiding guild really only actually raided one night a week and we managed to down heroic Lich King. Er. There's an explanation for that. I was in a progression HICC10 guild at that time with one of the best progression rates on the server. (Yay me, but no really, it was pretty fun.) ICC was the first instance to introduce a buff the older it got. It started at 10% and IIRC went up to 50% or 60%. All damage and health of all party members. Blizzard wanted people to finish that place because it was the end of a massive story arc. But when the LK first came out 10m literally couldn't do him in anything less than 25m gear. Our 10m guild managed since some of us were actually in 25m gear. At that time we were deep into DPS charts and you could just tell when someone wasn't carrying their weight in the fights. We had a very competent 8m group but were constantly filling the last two spots. It was noticeable when those were filled with good people or those were filled with bad. (One heals, one dps.) Went pvping after we all finished it and burnt out, then went back for more long after the buff had begun helping my old Vanilla/BC offshoot guild finish it themselves. They were more of what you describe. A once a week (in this case family) guild. We got through it with my doing around 40% of the damage, but me, the mediocre tank, and the amazing freaking heals dragged them through it.

FraQ I see your point. You are right, that endgame raiders, that had to care about efficiency, were minority (less than 5% according to Blizzard). But the fact is, that each class/role had usually only one "right" build with only minor variations. There were exceptions, but not many. When they removed skill trees, it felt like dumbing-down at first, but when we got used to it and tried various combinations, we all agreed it was good change. But I understand why someone might prefer classical skill trees (Grim Dawn is great example that skill trees aren't obsolete). The stat growth wasn't that bad. I'd guess it was ~3x 60 -> 70. But this is just a guess based on highest dps from a few screenshots and videos. It got much worse later. 400k dps as tank on Wind Lord Mel'jarak was ridiculously preposterous. Also, just occurred to me, I remember when Molten Core started that it was actually 3 (maybe more) guilds that formed "Raid-1" because no guild could field entire 40m raid on their own. It was also the time when ready check was performed by: "Whoever is ready, lie down!". But this is more of an anecdote than anything else. Edit: Those 12k hp were maximum with full raid buffs, multiple elixirs and stuff like that, AQ40/Naxx gear and tauren racial that added % stamina. Usually tanks had less than 10k hp.

Hm, interesting question for someone who has never played WoW before starting up 9-10 years in or however long it's been now... I'd have to think about it a bit.
I think honestly though, there's not much to say, if you have played any online game complete with character creator/classes etc, it's pretty much like all of them.
I mean quite honestly, if you have played a Dragon Age game, then you are 80% of the way there. The only difference is that the actual World of Warcraft is much, much bigger and probably isn't quite laid out super succinctly... more buttons and such... that said... when WoW is good I think it's a more accessible and engaging RPG than the two most recent Dragon Age games at least, even though I like parts of DA2, so any Bioware fan shouldn't have trouble jumping in and playing it.
If you have a decently modern computer, I would suggest immediately cranking all the graphics settings to max, it shouldn't be an issue because WoW on the lowest settings looks quite old, but fortunately with everything maxed out it's pretty spiffy and isn't actually super hard to achieve.
Anyway on the subject of Wrath, possibly the best cinematic, IMO.

On the subject of raiding I was never really a hardcore raider... it just never meshed I remember in Vanilla attempting Molten Core a few times, but the demands in terms of keeping people together and all that were clearly quite extreme. I'm glad they made it all more accessible with LFR in Cataclysm.

Of course if one wants to, there is certainly enough there to sink 6 hours a day into and that's exactly what I did back then =P Blizzard drastically reduced time you needed for raid preparation by restricting how many self buffs you could have. In vanilla it took hours to farm all the foods, elixirs, flasks, juju from winterspring and other stuff like that. Level 60 Naxxramas was called "potion quest", because all those things were mandatory for everyone. Three hours long raid could easily require 8 hours of farming, top guilds even had "paid" help to farm all of those. Mages had to log in at least a hour earlier to conjure all the water for other casters, highest tier was 4 pieces/10 second cast and you needed several hundreds. They usually complained, that they are a little more than coffeemakers. Not to mention components for group buffs, priests easily spent several times more on those than tanks on repairs. Stuff like that took a lot of time, but everything got eventually much user friendlier. WotLK was easy mode, considering.

I've never played WoW. Any suggestions for where to start? Now would be a good time to start. Once you buy the base set of the game (which is only $20 USD) you also get every expansion up to Warlords of Draenor, leaving Legion as the only expansion you need to actually purchase, since it is the newest one. And, once you buy Legion, you get a 1-time free character boost to level 100 so you can immediately start doing Legion-level content. 2 classes in the game (death knight and demon hunter) start out at higher levels than the others due to them being hero classes, so I advise against boosting them. Other than this, it's really just a matter of choosing a class that you enjoy and building your character. Once Legion arrives, you'll be allowed to have 12 characters on a single server (and I think it's like 60 total characters you can have on your entire account across different servers). If you're just starting out I recommend playing on a PvE server, not a PvP server, since on PvP servers it is possible for you to get ganked and killed by people out in the world while you're minding your own business. My personal main is an Orc death knight, been playing him ever since Wrath of the Lich King released (which is when death knights were released). As of Legion, there are warriors, rogues, mages, druids, paladins, priests, warlocks, hunters, death knights, monks, and demon hunters as playable classes. They all have their pros and cons. Of them all, mages, hunters, and rogues can only ever DPS, they have no tank or healing specializations. Each class has 3 specializations that gives them a different play style compared to each other spec. Like, spellcasters like mages will be casting spells in each of their specs, but their abilities will be different, you'll be prioritizing different stats, and wearing different gear as a Fire mage than a Frost mage.

If you're based in the US and you end up getting the game, I mostly play on Mal'Ganis, but I have characters on Kil'jaeden and Anub'arak as well (those are servers, the servers for this game are named after characters and locations important in the lore). And I just noticed that when I was listing off the classes up above that I forgot about shamans. Oh well, Blizzard forgot about them too :^)

Been playing WoW pretty much nonstop (with like two ~6 month breaks) since 2005. Got every class at 100 but I main a prot pally. Not sure how I like it since the pre-patch changes though. My main server is Azjol-Nerub US where I have all my Alliance characters, but I also play Elune US where I have my horde characters. Really looking forward to Legion, and I'm fully on board the hype train. And I just noticed that when I was listing off the classes up above that I forgot about shamans. Oh well, Blizzard forgot about them too :^) Enhance had like 3 and a half glory days on the 7.0 PTR where they were generating maelstrom faster than they could spend it and just doing all the damage in the world, then Blizz nerfed it. RIP. Also, everyone post pics of your chars so we can be hypercritical of each other's transmogs! imgur.com/a/q1YXc

First, shaman is great class, but mostly support. But in every expansion we had some topping dps/heal meters, and don't even get me startes on Windfury Totem in vanilla. That sucker increased my damage output (arms warrior) for more than 50%, before Blizz started their nerfing.
That said, yesterday I installed it, wondered why MSAA x8 reduces FPS by only 40%, while other games usually go for at least 80%, then wondered again why are there two higher settings and proceeded to create demon hunter.
There I found two major issues. First, only elves can be demon hunters, which is game breaking. Like, seriously? Why do you think Tauren can be paladins now? Two of three new classes that are at launch Blood Elf exclusive. PREPOSTEROUS!!! Second, I tried to name my new demon huntress (female BE is tolerable) Babymetal and it was available. Seriously?!!?!?!!? What is wrong with people? Well, at least Fell Stalker mount and pet look cool. And seeing 44 people in guild online, where just week age there were maybe 4, some of them people I didn't see for 5 years (yes, see, like in RL in pub doing shots), was cool also.

I caved in. Just bought Legion and started downloading. Haven't played in three years, so this will be interesting. I played quite a lot some years ago (I started around the time Lich King came out). Was never big on raiding. I had extreme amounts of social anxiety at the time. So I mostly just played with friends. Maybe I'll get into raiding too this time around. I have missed WoW a lot, so really looking forward to start playing again!

It seems to be going great, so far... anyway... I haven't actually gotten to Legion specific content but maybe soon.
I noticed in dungeons the atmosphere seems way more laid back, a lot less "Gotta win now now" and more just people playing calm and having fun, kind of a cool change IMO.
Of course, even not doing dungeons or raids the amount of stuff to do in WoW (that is more like SP based) is pretty overwhelming.

I have missed WoW a lot, so really looking forward to start playing again! Legion is great so far. took me a day and a half to hit 110, and I've recently started doing heroic 5-man dungeons and world quests. I've never really cared for WoW's PvP, so I can't speak to the quality of that, but the PvE stuff is excellent so far. 2 dungeons are mythic-only, and Blizzard will be re-introducing Karazhan as a mythic 5-man with patch 7.1. I can't wait for Emerald Nightmare to open on the 20th, along with the mythic+ keystone dungeons.

I'm enjoying the PvE stuff quite a bit too right now. Got my Shaman to 110 yesterday(1 down, 11 more to go =P). I like that the world quests which replaces dailies stack up over 3 days, so I can let them stack up and don't feel like I missed anything if I get too busy with RL one day to log in for very long.
Although some of the Warden kill quests have been pretty rough even as Enhancement with excellent self heals. I couldn't imagine doing them on my Fury Warrior which not only has horrid self healing, but 20% more damage taken while enraged.
They do the raid finder now if you simply want to see the raids and story attached to them. Historically the difficulty has been somewhere between very easy and brain dead, so I suspect that trend will continue for Legion as well.
I'm also loving the lore, even if they're going a little George RR Martin on the characters.

I have it installed. Was healing invasion groups on my resto drood for a while. Haven't opened up Legion yet though. Might tomorrow or the next day. Was having too much fun with Master of Orion. Had the ME3MP itch again lately though too... Feel like I need to krogan things to death.
I'm so torn.

The Warden quests are supposed to be done with groups, since the targets have buffs that increase their health and damage by 50, 100, and 200%. I main an Unholy DK (probably the second-best solo class behind BM hunter), and soloing the Warden targets is nigh-impossible if they have the 100 or 200% buffs. Even with 1.7 million health they melee hit me for around 1/4 my total health, about the best I can do is put up my DoT, get a few quick hits in, and kite the target while my pet kills it.

I almost got one of them down, I think it was 75% HP and 50% damage. I probably could have if I had prepared right, though my burst damage with Doomhammer is completely insane since Windfury goes from a 12% chance on auto attack to a 100% chance and triples the damage when I use my artifact ability. By the time I revived and healed up more people had showed up, so it worked out anyway.

lol, Khadgar's Upgraded Servant has had one hell of an upgrade. Apparently it's a known bug, the servant is following me everywhere. Like, from Orgrimmar to the Broken Isles. I've logged off and back in many times but he's been following me for about two days now. Bloody hilarious. Some people are whining about it on the forums but I'm finding it to be a benignly interesting bug. Free glowy pet. Got my feral to 102 so far, fun times. Played through the Emerald Dream and just starting up a new area on the scout map. I see what you mean about them "Game of Thronesing" the characters. Emerald Dream was a long time coming. Hell I remember when there were rumours that it was going to be the next expac after WotLK. So I expected some pretty big events, but I hope they don't turn into a formulaic "One zone; one major death" catchall. Still, lots of fun so far, especially as a feral druid rampaging through the Emerald Dream. And for a populated PvP server I've actually only been ganked once and that was in Dalaran-over-Karazhan. And jebus it's PRETTY in there. I'm loving the artifact druid forms as well. Sexy kitty.
