Mass Effect 1:
First let me start of by saying this was my first run of the entire series ever. When ME1 was first released I bought the Xbox version, but the disc broke shortly after landing on Eden Prime. So I had no idea what happens in that game or the rest of the series. Fast forward to May 13, 2021 and Steam notifies me that the Legendary Edition had been released. So I immediately purchased the game, and have been playing consistently ever since.
Now unto my review...
First let me say I enjoy the music during the character creation of the first game, it reminded me of music from movies from the 80's. Anyway I like all of the options we get especially in terms of backstory. For pre-service history I chose Colonist, because I like the idea of My Shepard to beat all odds and become a hero. For my psychological profile I picked War Hero, because I like the idea of my Shepard being a living legend before the game starts. I chose the default male Shepard and picked Soldier class.
Companions...
Kaidan:
Interesting backstory was using outdated tech for his biotics, I got the feeling he had a history of being unstable due to the outdated L2 implants. Anyway he is not much for conversation and is pretty much direct to the point. He pretty much stops saying anything new after the third converation.
Ashley:
Racist thought Shepard recruiting aliens would open her mind, but like Kaidan I hardly used her. She was more talkative than Kaidan though so there's a good thing.
Wrex:
Wrex is my boy love his look, voice, and attitude. Wrex and the plight of the Krogan's reminded me of Canderous Ordo and the Mandalorians in KOTOR series. Both races laid seige to the galaxy, and both races were reduced to mercernary work and thuggery, after losing a decisive war. But anyway I used Wrex a lot in the first game he was a powerhouse and could use biotics to top it off.
Tali: Love Tali, don't know but since I am a tech geek and she is one also I was attracted to her immediately. Used her a lot with Wrex especially in the Citadel.
Garrus: Another boy of mine really liked his backstory, voice, and look. Loved that he was a former C-Sec officer now turned vigilante like Batman.
Liara: Shepards LI across all three games. While being a tech geek I am also a history buff and always wanted to do archeology, and the fact that she is both a history buff and archeologist was icing on the cake. Immediately fell for her. Used her a lot also with Tali and Wrex.
Story....
The story is great, one of BioWare's best. I was immediately hooked when Joker showed the broadcast of the Geth attack on Eden Prime, and then when that bastard Saren killed Nihilus. I thought Nihilus would become a party member. But throughout the game I made Paragon choices, so even on Virmire and in the end I tried to talk down Saren despite my feelings. Oh yeah the twist that the ship Saren was on was actually a Reaper a sentient ship caught me by surprise.
Choices....
Here are the ones I remember and boy does this series have a lot of them.
Virmire: I talked down Wrex. I sent Ashley with the Salarian STG team. I chose to save Ashley. I felt bad for Kaidan but I did not think I could make it back in time. I thought there would be some sort of timer. So in the end I chose Ashley. I also believed that of the two she would have the most character growth throughout the series.
Beneath the Sky: This was a dlc but one I really enjoyed. In the end I powered off all of the thrusters, and convinced the leaders of the Batarians Balak to stand down thus saving the colony.
Endgame: I chose to save the fleet over the council. My reasoning was since the council never believed me, that humanity will and start preparing defenses against the Reapers. I also made Captain Anderson the new Counselor.
Bugs and Glitches....
There were two main ones. One was at the end of the Exo-Geni factory the game started to lag, and the second was sometimes one companion would stop following me, so I would have to do a save and reload. This mainly happened with Liara.
Closing Statements....
Loved the Mako but hated the Thresher Maws I killed 3 of the 4 I saw in the game. But the Mako was durable way more than the Hammerhead in ME2. It took me a while to the controls but once I did it was easy peasy.

Her sentiment about human should not rely on alien does have a point as in the first ME, human are looked down upon by other races and the turian councilor sparatus openly admits that he does not care that much about a few dozen human colony being threatened by Saren. The problem is that while she does have a point, she pushes it too far by saying alien should not be allowed in every part of the normandy. I never thought about the ressemblance between ordo and wrex but now that you mention it, they do have a lot of similarities. Both of them part of a proud warrior race that made the galaxy tremble before they fell.

I never thought about the ressemblance between ordo and wrex but now that you mention it, they do have a lot of similarities. Both of them part of a proud warrior race that made the galaxy tremble before they fell. I don't hate Ashley either. After I wrote the review I remembered that Ashley said that her grandfather had surrendered during the First Contact War. I can understand from that her resentment . But when Ashley and Liara confronted Shepard and asked him to make a choice. Ashley said a lot of hateful and racist things about Liara and that's a no no in my book lol. But you're right a lot of aliens both fear and distrust humans like that racist Turian Councilor. It is also good to remember that Pressly did not trust Nihilus or any aliens, but according to his datapad found by the wreckage of the Normandy he had a change of heart, and came to trust the aliens that joined Shepard. As for Wrex and Canderous, once I heard the lore about the Krogans and the Krogan Rebellions I immediately compared it to the Mandalorian War. But it seems BioWare intended to have to Canderous' in this game. Because Zaeed to me looks like what I imagined Canderous would look like if there was a remake. He is also a mercenary like Wrex and Canderous.

Ok. Ashley.
She is prejudiced in the story, yeah, but I always felt it was more of a grudge than a malevolent nature. After all, her backstory is that her family name and personal career were severely damaged when humanity dealt with aliens... and now humanity answers to a council that has the very race that did it as one of it's pillars.
Than she works with a couple of aliens for a few weeks, and she gets over it.
So yeah, I feel the criticism of Ashley, while warranted, is a bit too much.
Anyways, as for the choices in ME1... in my first playthrough of the OT, back in 2009, if memory serves, I killed Wrex. I didn't want to, but I didn't have enough morality points, and hadn't done his personal quest, so, no choice there; it was either him or Shepard.
I saved Ashley most of my playthroughs, because usually I pick her as romance interest when I'm male Shepard, and Liara as femshep, so I kinda have in my head canon that she survives there...
That said, mechanics wise, I feel that Ash is redundant if you play as a soldier, so she gets saved but sits unused most of ME1 and all of ME3. Kaidan, OTOH, is very versatile IMHO, and in ME3, has tools to handle all kinds of defenses. I will pick him whenever I play soldier, because it feels I have an extra squad mate in ME3 when I do...
Only my current PT is a renegade adept, so, I'll pick Ash just to use her on ME3 and get her dialogue choices...

She had her "I just don't know any" issue but she got along with them just fine before long. I actually liked her. That said, had we found she were a Cerberus operative, it would have been awesome. And not as a bad guy either.

But she got on my shit list when she said derogatory things about Liara. At that moment I was like "well now I know who's not coming back from Virmire." Though I am not a monster I did feel bad for her when I chose to save Kaidan that time around.

The only time I can think of where Ash says anything negative about Liara is if Shepard is flirting with both at the same time (in which case she’s not the bad guy in the situation). If you’re not, Ashley has only positive things to say about Liara similar to Tali. Should also note the same thing happens with Kaidan, as well as some other creeper lines about her regardless (making Ash nicer of the two).

Yes now I remember it was right after the Feros debriefing on the Normandy. That Shepard was confronted by both Liara and Ashley. I don't remember ever flirting with Ashley in the two times I played ME1 I always flirt with Liara. But anyway I forgot exactly what she says but when I first heard it she put me off. I agree if I did flirt with Ashley which it seems likely according to what you say she was not the bad guy in that situation. Also I should state I did not get this scene the first time I played only in the second.

I can't remember right now. But I do remember being turned off by her comments at the time. So much so that it made my choice on Virmire an easy choice. Well now I'm curious. What scene is it in? I want to look it up on Youtube. It's when Liara and Ashley confront BroShep and give him an ultimatum.

To be fair, Bio screwed up with the casually talking to someone and flirting with someone in the MET.

The only game this didn't happen with was Inquisition. From the start I made it my duty to romance Cassandra and it was made easy with the icons.

Aye, it's like you are walking through a minefield whenever you talk to your party/team members. That's why I'm not going to that anymore, unless it involves being part of the main questline.

And MEA was just as good as DAI. It’s because those games had dialogue specific for romances.

Then why does Peebee ask Ryder if they want to "fool around" in the escape pod then?

I think all the games except for ME1 (maybe DAO...it's been too long since I played) are good about making it obvious when you're going to start a romance, so that you can be nice to your squad and talk to them without fear that they will think you're flirting.

Then why does Peebee ask Ryder if they want to "fool around" in the escape pod then? Because she doesn’t mind casual sex instead of relationships (worried she’ll be hurt again). If you never click a flirt option, she even commented to on how you “haven’t taken the bait yet”. And unlike earlier games, she is totally fine if you turn her down. Also, if that scene occurs when you’re locked into a relationship she won’t offer it, a big difference from earlier games.
