Kotaku @kotakuDragon Age's senior creative director has left BioWare: kotaku.com/dragon-ages-senior-creative-director-has-left-bioware-1848114644?rev=1637721540237&utm_campaign=Kotaku&utm_content=1637721695&utm_medium=SocialMarketing&utm_source=twitterHis departure was announced earlier today in an email sent to staff by BioWare studio GM Gary McKay: Hi everyone, I hope you are well. I’m writing to inform you all that Matt Goldman is leaving BioWare. We have mutually agreed to part ways, and his last day is today. We understand that Matt’s departure has an impact on you, as well as the game’s development. Rest assured our commitment to a high-quality Dragon Age game has not waivered, and we will not ship a game that is not up to BioWare’s standards. We, including EA’s executive team, have absolute confidence in the leadership here at the studio and the people working on this game to carry forward our vision. There is quite a bit of discussion on the Schmooples thread but I have suggested bringing it over here.

Someone pointed this out in the twitter thread but the fact that no one has (yet?) wished him well or told some fond anecdote is... interesting.

Going by what I'm reading elsewhere, the guy was abusive and toxic. I wouldn't be surprised if there was one too many complains lately and they had enough and going by the discussion around this departure (at the elsewhere), he wasn't the first abusive/toxic old timer at BioWare that got canned in the last few years.

I know a thing or two about 'exit announcements' (my day job).
The announcement screams that Corporate BioWare/EA were pleased that he was moving on.
Whether it was that he was building wonders that EA didn't want commercially and he went 'back me or sack me' OR There were behind the scenes aspects to his working style that became problematic.
We will never know. And frankly it's unhelpful to guess as it'll be unfair to someone.
Matt was responsible for the 'look' of Dragon Age and has experience back to Baldur's Gate, Jade Empire and KOTOR.
But at this stage of development, it already has the look it has, it needs a development project manager now to bring it home to ship.
It is what it is, speculations that this exit 'kills' the game seem to be pulled out of thin air.

Someone pointed this out in the twitter thread but the fact that no one has (yet?) wished him well or told some fond anecdote is... interesting. Exactly. Maybe the Bioware staff isn´t allowed to comment on his departure which i doubt. But why hadn´t Mark Darrah, David Gaider or someone else who left Bioware / the Dragon Age Team before him said something nice about him?

If Scenario A would be true when i don´t unterstand why nobody from his colleagues said some nice words about him.
I agree his work for DA 4 has to be almost finished. Also we still have Matt Rhodes for the DA Art part.
Personal i don´t care. I only care if Patrick Weekes left Bioware.

Although, one is a rather WTF example of what he did.

It is kinda weird that noone is doing the usual "sorry to see you go" stuff or "he was a great and can't be replaced" that usually happens Either they were told not to which would be weird but not impossible or he was not pleasent to work with and did something stupid. Or it was something else and we will be seeing the usual pleasentries anytime

Rest assured our commitment to a high-quality Dragon Age game has not waivered, and we will not ship a game that is not up to BioWare’s standards. So, release the game and let the modders finish it and continue patch work. Edit: Hopefully I am wrong here.

Yeah it doesn't make sense that noone would say the usual pleasentries. Of course the fact that he hasn't said anything is weird too.

If someone wants to be called 'it' or some other singular word then I'm fine with that. Weird. No one asked what you are fine with. In fact, the subject was about someone else and what they are fine with. Like.... okay, thanks for informing us that you willingly choose to be disrespectful? I appreciate the board members who continue to point out Patrick's preferred pronouns. Anyway, yeah, I'm not too worried about Dragon Age 4. It's been in development for 3 years, much of Goldman's vision will likely stay. They have to start marketing the game soon so I doubt they will overhaul it. Damn though, this development has been brutal. What exactly have they been fighting against? The RPG elements? The Story? The scope? EA? So much talent from the studio has left. At least Dragon Age will make it out alive.

Yeah it doesn't make sense that noone would say the usual pleasentries. They also don´t made comments about just his art and adoiding the personal stuff. If nobody has nothing nice to say about someone even there is something fishy. Yeez we are even talking about a canadian company which has its HQ in one of most polite countries on earth.

BioWare is a company with employees. People move on (they are not slaves or chattels) It's noteworthy when it's a senior person, but in DA4's case (2 years out) success or failure does not come down to this.

People move on (they are not slaves or chattels) It's noteworthy when it's a senior person, but in DA4's case (2 years out) success or failure does not come down to this. It depends. I agree that Bioware is fine with or without Matt Goldman but some games lost their mojo when someone big left. For example i don´t know if i wanted to play Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2 (if its ever come out ) without Brian Mitsoda and his terrific writing. And same goes for Patrick Weekes & DA 4. I am well aware that he is just one member
of a huge team but the Lead Writer is somewhat important for a Big Story RPG. But there are of course still in theory good replacements within Bioware for them.

I do remember the pronoun being stated by Patrick a long time ago, but frankly had forgotten. When I made a mistake I was kindly reminded and was able to correct myself (the polite thing to do). I was hoping we would not digress into having a pronoun debate in the thread, but now we've cleared that up, let's move back to today's exit. Thanks. some games lost their mojo when someone big left. Yes. But it so depends on the person and that's hard to assess externally. People like Mark Darrah, Mike Laidlaw and David Gaider continued to have great reputations and followings after leaving. What happens here remains to be seen.
