Sure but the AOE tools aren't really melee oriented they're just spells you cast. I'm not saying a Knight Enchanter can't cast spells, much like a Vanguard can go for traditionally Adept or even Tech spells. Nova is clearly meant to support a melee build. So does Charge, Annihilation, etc... most of the Biotics tree really as it's focused on control and force.
You can also build your entire toolkit around it and you are supported. You can't really say that about Knight Enchanter, which is typically forced to use melee hits to BE a knight enchanter, unlike Vanguard which doesn't make use of melee attacks unless they have no abilities up. Power Vanguards just cast spells in melee range, duck into cover if they get in trouble, and heavily make use of Force to keep themselves alive.
In other words, take the Force Mage utility of DA2, the Knight Enchanter of DAI, a few melee-based spells, and you have the perfect melee mage.

Combat is the best in the series, hands down.
Character Progression is great. Based on the best parts of ME1 and ME3. The fact that you can spec in anything without feeling like you were being punished was good. I like the "infinite" progression capability.
Environment is definitely top notch. The worlds feel alive and you're very much a part of it. I loved engrossing myself in the space travel (Dunno why people complained about that), and every zone has a unique character. I like how big the zones are, and the empty space (such as in Eos) is appropriate for space travel. Again, not sure why people thought it was a bad thing. All of space and you want shit to be clustered. Like wut?
Music is A+. As always for BioWare.
Voice Acting 10/10. Tom Taylorson is beast. The rest of the crew are good. I did laugh at Angara randomly having a weird Australian/British accent going on.
Side missions are definitely the best in the series. In ME1 they were just meaningless busywork with zero context. In ME2 they were just deliveries. They improved in ME3 with context but they were weirdly stalkerish ( I pretended my Shepard talked to them). In MEA the context is always there, and you never know when it turns into something actually relevant.
Dialogue has more breadth than the trilogy. It has a bit less depth but that's a result of letting you roleplay your character without gameplay issues, so I'll take it.
Banter is pretty damn great. I love how the squad shuffles around the Tempest. I like the nomad banter too. They're definitely interesting to listen to.
Romance is OK. Unfortunately it will take a lot to top the Shepard/Kaidan story for me. I liked romancing Gil and Reyes. They were fun. Cora seems cool might do her next.
Main Quest was alright. BioWare games rarely have specific strong antagonists. It's usually just a larger threat that you have to deal with. So in a sense I'd say that despite the Kett antagonists being somewhat weak, all the minor antagonists lumped together along with it made for an interesting story. Frankly it was good for the 1st installment. I would hope that the threat ramps up with the Remnant/Scourge later on, but let's hope MEA gets a sequel first.
Multiplayer is fun.
If I have one major criticism, it's that they need to QA their releases a bit more strongly. Andromeda was a great game, but it was hampered by bugs (before the patches) that didn't let people appreciate it as much as they should have. I don't blame people for being turned off by the amount of negative press. Speaking of, they really shouldn't release as much media content pre-release about the game anymore. It just let people dogpile on it and meme it to death.

MEA Power Vanguard basically.
Able to enter combat instantly? Check. (Charge) Powerful "magic" enhanced attacks? Check. (Biotic Punch/Asari Sword) AoE damage tools? Check. (Nova, Shockwave, Annihilation). Strong focus on control? Check. Best defense is a good offense? Check.
Knight enchanter focused too much on melee hits. Ideally the focus would shift a bit more to ability usage (like a Power Vanguard basically).

You can apply this to any part of the game really.
Your opinion of something is influenced by what you've been exposed to. You spend some time away from something, the weight of what other people say matters much less.
Incidentally, this is why people think older games are greater. Not only was it likely to be their first experience (so a blank slate really), back then social media wasn't the craze it was today. People could actually experience the story and form their own opinions.
It's why I've decided to never participate in any video game discussion as soon as the 1st trailer hits. It'll be less fun for sure, but I want to experience the game as I would and not as others would like me to. I loathe that MEA was ruined for me by the social media craze.
Got back into it for a second playthrough again (after all this time), and I'm actually enjoying it much more than I did originally. Who knew?
In short, crowdsourcing your opinion of a game is a terrible idea.

I just fired up a new game after a year, as I finally got a new PC. With all the patches, MEA is pretty damn great. I'm having a blast on my Soldier/Vanguard/Adept on Insanity I should be farther ahead, but MP is too damn fun tbh. Seriously I can't get over how great the combat is in this game. I have a massive backlog with my new shiny PC so I wasn't planning on replaying the SP again after this but I already wanna try a tech/soldier build in NG+.

I have a feeling Anthem will be a good game only to be sunk by the massive amount of memes because Bioware is the cool thing to hate due to it daring to not have a straight white protagonist.
At this point I'm just happy I enjoyed BioWare games before the Internet turned to shit and anything extra will be a bonus.

People vastly overestimate how much is actually carried over into each game... The point is to maintain consistency, not to make each game a direct sequel of the one before.
They also overestimate how much of the total writing budget is attributed to those "100 hours" compared to those "50". In fact a lot of those extra "50" are just used on combat, moving around, and general side quests with very little writing to add small tidbits to the lore and some immersion in the story controlled by the player, like a human choosing/denying an elf's request to visit a grave being indicative of their character.
The current system is fine. DAI in particular had excellent branching within the main story.

It's not even regarding them being gay honestly. I meant as a character "archetype" in general why is this something we sort of latch onto? It's one of the major archetypes. Not sure why you are singling it out. If you mean why I prefer that over the shy or tsundere archetypes, that's just personal preference. Also might be partly because the "suave rogue" is kinda stereotypical to some degree, and the noble knight is probably as opposite as you can get in personality.

Honestly why do people care? Why not make a good character regardless of look or archetype Well I've gotten a bit too old to care, but it would be nice to have the "noble knight" rather than the suave roguish type for m/m in Dragon Age. Some variety in archetypes wouldn't hurt. The same would apply for f/f really. Not all gay characters have to be fierce.

For the same reason RPGs will die as a genre sooner rather than later. RPGs are expected to have a lot of features, and BioWare games in particular shoot themselves in the foot somewhat by incorporating team-based gameplay with companions and relationships. All while delivering a cinematic experience.
Unfortunately "live services" and multiplayer modes are the only viable path forward, yet even their own fans trash them for doing so.
In the same vein, RPG devs need to focus on what makes them unique. BioWare should focus their efforts on what makes them unique and not spread themselves so thin.
