I'm not sure how I feel about making Alfred the Great, a man who is generally being portrayed as an educated and enlightened ruler by the history books, a bad guy... because he doesn't want us to take a piece of his people's land and make it ours. That and Layla are the things I'm rather meh about. Everything else sounds pretty darn interesting.

This isn't the best thread to go to. Might I suggest the today in Anthem thread? There are players who have plenty of experience and will gladly help you. I figured I’d get the most honest response here. People who like it will uptalk the game, and I was just looking for a brutal critque to help me make up my mind. I suspect many people posting in this thread haven't played the full game, but many will have played the demo. That's what I did, and the impression that demo gave us may no longer be completely correct. I really liked the flying mechanics and feeling but felt that Anthem has limited value for a solo RPer. You can play the storyline solo, but the game will keep reminding you that this is a poor choice and you should be playing in a group. Also, there was only one story quest (consisting of three missions if I remember correctly) in the demo which had about the depth and quality of a good Andromeda side quest. Whether that is good or bad depends on your tastes and preferences. The loot, if you care about that aspect, was utterly boring, looking like everything came from the same manufacturer or even the same product line (military small arms with cloth wrap somewhere). But take this with a grain of salt since I didn't play the full game.

I luckily get to work from home, my primary hobby is gaming so I don't mind staying inside (but if I want to go out, I still can), and people around here are still sensible with barely a fricking panic hoarder in sight. As long as those (and any infected) won't migrate here from elsewhere, we can probably ride this out.

Well, thanks for all the spoilers I guess. Terribly sorry, since the game had been out for so long and we were several pages into the thread, I hadn't considered that those reading might not have played it already. My bad, will remember to tag everything from hereon. Aww, no worries. I'm very sorry for my initial grumpy reaction! I trust that by the time I get to play this, my shitty memory will have done its job... ![](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/qUctXNjCPgwPaLsZeKry.png)

I remember Sony doing some focus testing for the game while it was in development because they were nervous that a female protagonist would hurt sales, and they were relieved to find that nobody really gave a damn considering how insanely awesome everything else about it was. There was a bit of general outrage over someone daring to treat male and female protagonists differently, obviously. ![](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/ZAddSJoGFVGOhkAZMQPp.gif) Personally I thought it was a sensible thing to ascertain while gambling millions of dollars on a product instead of either changing Aloy to a man or just ducking their heads for fear of scandalizing the budding SJW community. And the results were an encouraging indicator that as long as a piece of entertainment is fundamentally well-crafted and has characters and story that fit together organically then the protagonists' dangly bits are never going to seem out of place. Aloy not being female would also have meant... the story would have lost many of the thematic elements that only work because Aloy is female, such as her coming from a matriarchal society, being the clone of the woman responsible for figuring out how to rebirth the entire world and her relationship with her surrogate father Rost (who is revealed to have had a daughter that died).
Moreover, Aloy being male would have meant that we'd have started the game as a man, in a society run by women who further ostracised us because we don't have a mother. You just know that there are people online who would have then gone on to claim HZD was "woke anti-male propaganda"... even though I have the feeling that those same people probably have made the same critique because Aloy is a woman as well. Well, thanks for all the spoilers I guess.

Oh, I remembered something when I read the MEA section today.
Please, please, please get away from the story trope "bad things happen because people are stupid". It was everywhere in DAI (mages, templars, wardens, Orlesians) and it frustrated the living daylights out of me. It doesn't make me feel smarter when everyone around me acts like a dumbass in dire need of therapy, it makes me feel like the only normal guy in the loony bin, and that isn't a good thing.
And related to that, please don't let Solas be the next Reapers, i.e. a danger to the entire world that no one believes you about and you end up running around doing favours for several assorted factions until they kindly support your struggle against everyone's frigging doom, only to be told that there's no conventional way of defeating him, but you could get yourself dissolved in that magical acid pool over there and change everyone into a mage or some such. Please don't.

But I'm sure we can cut Star Wars some slack there - after all, the troops of the Empire/First Order/Space Nazis often have trouble hitting the wall of a barn from the inside. Anyone who is not the hero has their blasters set to "never in a million years". Just look how well the rebels did at the start of New Hope. A tight corridor, perfect line of sight, enemies coming in a line...still shot down only 2 or 3 Stormtroopers before getting ass kicked. They probably had a nagging feeling about what was coming behind said Stormtroopers ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/RebJidSPcxyF0U0Rr0uW.png) (but yeah, in that situation it seems harder to miss than to hit)

Training with a master means learning combat techniques that haven proven effective on the battleground, techniques that are the result of a long refining process, sometimes over several generations. Flawed combat techniques die on the battlefield because their practicioners get killed until no one is left to pass them on. To achieve the same or even better results without training would require a flawless instinct for combat, one that is right every single time, because the first time it isn't would mean defeat against a trained opponent. Rey using a lightsaber without any prior training and going on to defeat a bunch trained sith and their minions is the equivalent of a random girl in the middle ages picking up a sword and defeating several of Liechtenauer's disciples. I don't know why, but I like the idea that people think this is SO impossible for Rey. ![](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/FumHmgIatAKrBHKVLvNP.gif) I'm not sure where I used the word "impossible" in my post, in fact, I'm sure I didn't. It's not impossible that someone does everything right the first time they try it - it's just not bloody likely. My post was more meant to underline how important good training is to a combatant's continued survival against trained enemies. But I'm sure we can cut Star Wars some slack there - after all, the troops of the Empire/First Order/Space Nazis often have trouble hitting the wall of a barn from the inside.

I would make the claim that using Anthem's codebase means less time creating a new one from the ground up and more time refining it and making actual game features. However, this is a concern I see as reasonable, seeing how some of Anthem's own features have been implemented. Personally, I put the blame on the leads at Edmonton for not listening to the people who had experience in actual MMO games (Austin). (See's LukeBarret liking your comment and wondering what he knows that we don't) For some reason this reminded me of the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG rule that states that your maximum Sanity score can never exceed (100 - Cthulhu Myth Knowledge)... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/RebJidSPcxyF0U0Rr0uW.png)

I honestly can't wrap my head around the OP at all.
If the Andromeda galaxy, due to a lack of reaper-induced resets, was home to ancient, super advanced civilizations that had drained most of its resources by now, then wouldn't those civilizations very likely also be aware of the Milky Way's existence and have figured out intergalactic travel long before the Andromeda Initiative did?
Also, if the AI successfully reverse-engineered mass relays and could construct their own, the establishment of a relay network would take a lot of time - they'd still have to somehow reach the target cluster that any given relay connects to so that the twin can be put in place. If the task of establishing that network can be completed within the protagonist's life time, then mass relays are obsolete already because some other way must exist to reach the placement points.
And I can't see why the AI's arrival would upset any existing balance of power between galaxy spanning super-empires. The AI has less people than a major present day city, requiring many, many generation to fully spread over even a single planet. Their presence would most likely be utterly meaningless to those alien empires.
There's a reason why Andromeda is so much like the Milky Way. The story was moved to Andromeda to avoid the continuity dilemma caused by ME3's endings but without putting the player into a too unfamiliar environment. That's why most of the Milky Way species were brought along. Andromeda is the Milky Way away from the Milky Way. It's intentional, not accidental.

2) IME, a steady diet of grimdark, dystopian, horror, high drama, etc. desensitizes people over time. The more of it we consume, the more it takes to get the same level of emotional engagement. Hey now, I grew up with Grimm's Fairy Tales as a pre-schooler and grand dad's tales from the eastern front after that, and I'm a perfectly balanced individual. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/uYQYVMAupPAfTXFFwWlB.png) I agree that the amount of consumed dark genres may desensitize an individual towards aspects of those genres, but I don't think that it influences how much we like a certain character or group of characters. For example, it's not the less dark atmosphere of MEA that made me find its characters less engaging, I just happened to find them not very interesting. I don't need a terribly dark world to like other people or I wouldn't have any friends in real life. I didn't feel any connection to Ryder because he was so different from me. If I had been responsible for 20,000 people in cryosleep, in an alien galaxy with no option to go home, I'd be way too worried to make any jokes. It made the entire premise of the story feel unreal to me. But that's just my individual reaction.

TBH I don' tthink MEA can really be blamed for that as wrriting on a lo tof TV shows ashas gone down the pan as well I think these days. Growing up there were a lo tof TV shows I enjoyed watching whereas these days I don't watch TV at all really. I occasionally watch a bit of sport like football(Soccer) for example but that's about it. I focus mostly on my games these days. TBH MEA is on eo fthe few things I've found to come out in recent years that I have enjoyed. It's not perfect by any means but it's a lot better than a lot of stuff I've seen. I don't blame MEA's writing for anything... I just feel that it has engaged me less than BioWare's older games. But that's just personal taste and preference, not an indicator of quality or lack thereof. I don't know enough about writing to judge its actual quality, all I can comment on is how much I enjoy it.

Can I give you another like for your honesty and making it real. I liked Andromeda enough that I would love a sequel, so we disagree... but I do recognize and respect your feelings as well. +1. And I absolutely respect your desire for a sequel, and I hope that it will be made so you and all the other fans looking forward to it can enjoy it. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/KGsHESiZGZU0pPuHuhQr.png) I would definitely check it out too, because it might still be improved in ways I would appreciate and make me want to play it. Truth be told, I sometimes wonder whether my feelings towards MEA are not caused by the game itself, but by a change to my preferences and enthusiasm for story driven gaming and I'm just nostalgically remembering how older games swept me off my feet, and blame the lack of that feeling on MEA instead of myself.

Wow. Some of the arguing in here has enough bad faith to kickstart its own heretic cult.
Personally, I don't know what I want at this point.
- Both galaxies are basically the same to me as far as exploring their unknown parts is concerned. Neither has any phenomena that can only exist in that one galaxy but not in the other since both obey the same laws of physics.
- The Milky Way is the AI's origin system, but narratively at a dead end. This could be fixed by letting enough time pass and/or a big event that equalizes ME3's ending choices, but that might also take the feeling of familiarity away.
- Andromeda is not very interesting to me. The Angara are kinda there, the Kett feel like recycled collectors - another grim carapace-covered race that converts other races. Been there, done that, blew up the base.
- Shepard's story is over and Ryder is... kinda okay, I guess. I finished MEA. But I can't say I'm eager for a sequel.
I suppose what it really depends on is not which galaxy and protagonist are chosen, but whether any future Mass Effect title is written by the same team that wrote MEA and Anthem, in the same writing style of those games. It just doesn't do much for me.

LOL yeah but as long as they're not civilians, got booted in ACOD a few times for getting frustrated with idiots with pieces of wood attacking me and decided to run amok. Me - "Let me kill this guard in front of these slaves at this marble quarry and they can be free" Slaves - "They killed the guards of the system that was keeping us here, lets attack them" <three hours later> Me - "No civilians left alive and four bounty hunters are dead, I guess they didn't want to be free" Another tragic case of violent Stockholm Syndrome...

The opinion of game journalists is not innately worth more than the opinion of gamers. The main difference is that only one of them gets paid for it.
In the end, no game is perfect and without flaws, and different people find different flaws tolerable... or not. A game that has enough going for it to be enjoyed despite any flaws it may have can't really be a bad game anyway.

Some great points in this thread. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/KGsHESiZGZU0pPuHuhQr.png) I think what I want again most of all is that satisfying feeling at the end of Dragon Age: Origins. That the story was finished. The arch demon dead and your personal decisions playing out. Very rarely have I sat in a warm glow of awe, watching the credits roll as I listened to I Am The One, like I did at the end of DAO. And, once back in the main menu, clicked "New Game". I very much want to experience that feeling again. A place to call home for my gang and myself, like DAI gave me. Just let me fix the roof this time and give me more options for customization, mkay? A crafting/customization system that lets me put cool outfits on my companions like in DAI. Killing effectively is good, but killing effectively with style is so much better! And a gang that combines badass with fun banter. There's nothing like having Varric, Isabela and Aveline with sarcastic Hawke. Somehow, that group got the balance just right for me and I took them everywhere.

So name something that YOU like that is "objectively bad". Why is it objectively bad? Why do you like it in spite of that? I know you didn't ask me, but I agree with therevanchist25 so I might as well supply an example of my own: I like the game Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption (2000). It has aspects that I think of as "objectively bad", namely terrible pathfinding and clunky combat. The pathfinding regularly gets characters - your protagonist, your party members and enemies alike - stuck in corners, requiring manual effort to free them, and sometimes makes them take an inexplicable detour when the path is actually clear. The combat is a simple "click to attack", paired with aforementioned terrible pathfinding, which often makes friend and foe mill around in a pitiful mess. And it can become a real chore because there's so much of it - pretty much every quest is about wading through four levels of dungeons with the same three enemy types until you reach the quest goal. Why do I like it anyway? I'm a sucker for the setting and its cheesy romantic storyline, which I can enjoy while still being absolutely aware of its glaring flaws.
